Chapter 4 - The Sterling Trap

The blinding high beams of a black armored SUV swept across the grand stone steps, casting long, menacing shadows that danced against the historic facade. The low, guttural purr of the V12 engine cut through the frigid winter air like a predatory growl. Inside the vehicle, tinted windows slowly lowered to reveal the sharp, immaculate profile of Victor Sterling, silver-haired, impeccably tailored, and wearing a cold, predatory smile that failed to reach his deadened eyes.
“Well, well, well,” Victor’s smooth, resonant voice projected effortlessly from the car’s external speakers, bouncing off the frozen masonry. “The Vance family reunion. How touching. Eleanor, you always did have a sentimental soft spot for strays.”
Eleanor Vance didn’t flinch. She stepped forward, squaring her shoulders inside her beige winter coat, her chin held high with practiced aristocratic disdain. She placed a protective, gloved hand on the shoulder of the young girl, who buried her face further into the dark grey blanket.
“Victor,” Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venom. “I see the years haven't taught you how to mind your own business. Dragging children into your corporate squabbles is a new low, even for you.”
Victor chuckled, stepping out of the vehicle with calculated slowness. His polished leather shoes crunched softly against the fresh snow. He adjusted his heavy cashmere scarf, his piercing gaze locked entirely on the silver crescent moon pendant resting in the girl’s lap.
“Business? My dear Eleanor, this isn’t about stocks or board seats anymore,” Victor replied smoothly, walking closer while two burly bodyguards flanked his movements from a discreet distance. “This is about unfinished family legacy. That little girl holds the controlling shares of Vance-Sterling Holdings in her biological right. A trust fund your precious daughter tried to steal away thirty years ago.”
Julian stepped in front of his mother, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached. His fists were balled at his sides, trembling with a volatile mix of grief and adrenaline.
“She is a child, you psychotic bastard!” Julian shouted, taking a threatening step forward. “Leave her alone, or I swear to God I will tear your entire empire down to the ground.”
Victor stopped, raising a single eyebrow in amused disbelief. He looked at Julian as if observing an insect trying to roar like a lion.
“Tear my empire down, Julian? With what? Your failing logistics division? Your mounting debts?” Victor shook his head slowly. “You have no idea what you’re dealing with. That girl isn’t just a random orphan. She carries the genetic key to the bio-tech patents your grandfather killed to protect.”
The stranger in the black suit, who had been watching quietly from the sidelines, suddenly stepped into the path between Victor and the Vances. He pulled a small, silver-plated flash drive from his pocket and held it up for Victor to see.
“And I have the decrypted files proving every single murder your father committed to secure those patents, Mr. Sterling,” the stranger said calmly.
Victor’s cold smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, dangerous flash of pure fury.
“Kill him,” Victor commanded softly, gesturing to his bodyguards.

Before the guards could even draw their weapons, a deafening screech of tires echoed down the street as a second unmarked vehicle slammed sideways across the road, cutting off their escape.
