Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Vance Manor

The harsh fluorescent lights of the underground vault hummed softly, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete floor where Marcus Vance knelt before the little girl. Evelyn stared down at the old man, her dark eyes completely unreadable, her small fingers still tightly clutching the silver crescent moon pendant against the fabric of her dark clothes.

Julian stood frozen between them, his mind reeling from the sheer impossibility of what he was witnessing. His uncle Marcus—the man whose memorial service he had wept through, whose estate had been carved up by the board of directors—was standing here in a secret bunker, alive and well, calling the child by a name no one had spoken yet.

“Evelyn?” Julian repeated, his voice cracking slightly as he looked down at the girl. “How do you know her name, Uncle? What is going on here? My mother lied, you faked your death, and now there’s an army of mercenaries hunting this child through the streets. You need to start talking right now, or I swear I’m blowing this whole vault wide open.”

Marcus slowly pushed himself up from the concrete using his brass-headed cane, wincing as his stiff joints popped in the cold air. He gestured toward a heavy oak table set up in the corner of the bunker, cluttered with old computer terminals, schematics, and stacks of faded paper files.

“Calm down, Julian. Anger is a luxury we lost the moment Victor Sterling tracked that pendant into the city,” Marcus said sternly, his voice carrying the unshakable weight of patriarch authority. He walked over to the table and picked up a heavy leather-bound ledger. “Your mother didn’t lie out of malice, Julian. She lied out of absolute terror. Thirty years ago, Victor didn't just want our company; he wanted our bloodline eliminated so he could legally seize the entire patent portfolio of our bio-tech division.”

Julian shook his head, refusing to accept the pieces falling into place. “Patents? People are trying to kill a child over medical patents?”

“Not just medical patents,” a new, electronic voice chimed in from the darkest corner of the vault.

Julian spun around as a bank of computer monitors suddenly flickered to life, illuminating a pale, gaunt face on the central screen. It was Dr. Aris Thorne, the brilliant geneticist who had mysteriously vanished from the Vance research lab the exact same night Clara’s car went off the bridge.

“Dr. Thorne?” Julian breathed, taking a step backward. “You’re here too? What is this, a graveyard of ghosts?”

Dr. Thorne’s eyes on the screen were wide and erratic, gleaming with a manic, desperate energy. “I’m alive, Mr. Vance, but not for much longer. Victor Sterling is already tracking the telemetry of the car you drove down here. He knows where the vault is. And he brought the master override code.”

Marcus slammed his fist down onto the oak table, rattling the papers. “How much time do we have, Aris?”

“Less than ten minutes,” the doctor’s digital voice cracked sharply through the speakers. “And unless Evelyn uses her genetic key to lock down the master firewall, Victor will wipe every file, burn this bunker to the ground, and take the girl back to the Sterling facility tonight.”

Julian looked down at Evelyn, who calmly stepped forward toward the glowing computer terminal, holding up her half of the silver crescent moon pendant as if she had practiced this exact moment a thousand times in her dreams.
