Chapter 5 - Crossfire in the Snow

The screech of sliding tires shattered the frozen silence of the street as a heavy, matte-black utility vehicle skidded across the icy asphalt, smashing directly into the side of Victor Sterling’s luxury SUV. The violent impact sent a shower of glass and shattered chrome glittering into the air like lethal confetti.

“Get down!” the stranger in the black suit yelled, diving forward and shoving Eleanor and the young girl behind the heavy stone balustrade of the steps.

Julian reacted on instinct, grabbing his mother’s arm and pulling her flat against the frost-covered stone just as the doors of the newly arrived utility vehicle flew open. Three figures clad in tactical winter gear emerged, their weapons drawn, instantly establishing a defensive perimeter around the steps.

Victor Sterling stumbled backward against his damaged vehicle, his aristocratic composure cracking for the first time. His face twisted in rage as he pointed a trembling finger at the new arrivals.

“Traitors!” Victor screamed at his bodyguards. “Eliminate them all! I want that flash drive and I want the girl!”

Chaos erupted in the quiet night. The sound of muffled, silenced gunfire cracked through the air, sending sparks flying off the stone balustrade inches from Julian’s head. Snow kicked up in chaotic white puffs as bullets ricocheted off the historic architecture.

Eleanor held the young girl tight against her chest, whispering soothing, broken phrases into her hair while the child wept silently, clutching the silver crescent moon pendant as if it were a talisman against the violence.

“Julian!” Eleanor shouted over the gunfire, her voice laced with absolute terror. “The side alley! There’s an emergency service exit behind the monument! Take her!”

Julian looked at his mother, panic warring with fierce determination in his eyes. “I’m not leaving you here with these monsters!”

“Go!” Eleanor roared, a fierce authority returning to her voice that brooked no argument. “Protect your niece, Julian! That is your only purpose tonight!”

Across the courtyard, the stranger in the black suit fired a precision shot from a compact pistol, disabling Victor Sterling’s lead bodyguard before taking a round to his shoulder. He grunted in pain, stumbling back against the stone steps, bleeding heavily onto the white snow.

“Mr. Vance! Take the girl now!” the stranger gasped, pressing a heavy metal key fob into Julian’s hand. “Use the black sedan parked by the alley. It’s armored. Drive straight to the address on the flash drive.”

Julian hesitated for only a fraction of a second. He scooped the terrified little girl up into his arms, wrapping her tightly in the dark grey blanket as she buried her face in his shoulder. Without looking back, he bolted toward the shadowy stone archway leading to the emergency exit.

Victor Sterling saw them breaking away and shoved his remaining bodyguard aside, pulling a heavy nickel-plated revolver from his coat pocket.

“You’re not going anywhere with my inheritance!” Victor roared, raising the weapon and taking dead aim at Julian’s back just as Julian rounded the corner of the stone archway.
