Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Stone

The stranger in the black suit stopped halfway up the stone steps, his breath pluming in the freezing winter air like phantom smoke. His eyes were fixed entirely on the young girl, who instinctively shrank back into her dark grey blanket, gripping the silver crescent moon half pendant so tightly her knuckles turned white. Eleanor Vance stepped forward, her elegant posture rigid, shielding the child with the hem of her beige winter coat.
“Step back, whoever you are,” Eleanor warned, her voice dropping into a sharp, commanding register that carried decades of inherited authority. “You have no business here, and you certainly have no right to approach this child.”
Julian stepped beside his mother, dropping his protective stance over the coffee cups to face the intruder directly. His brow furrowed in deep confusion and rising anger.
“Mom, who is this man? Do you know him?” Julian demanded, looking between the stranger and Eleanor’s visibly pale face. “And what did he mean by the missing piece of our family’s secret?”
The stranger let out a low, humorless chuckle, his gaze shifting to Julian with mock sympathy. “Mr. Vance, it is truly tragic how little you actually know about your own illustrious family history. Your dear mother has spent thirty years keeping this exact moment buried under millions of dollars in hush money and forged adoption records.”
Eleanor’s breath hitched, and she shot the man a look of pure venom. “Another word and I will ensure you never walk the streets of this city again.”
“Threats won’t change the blood in her veins, Eleanor,” the man replied smoothly, gesturing toward the shivering girl. “DNA doesn’t lie, and neither does that pendant. The child is your flesh and blood. The granddaughter you were told died in a hospital fire three decades ago.”
Julian stumbled backward, the color entirely draining from his face as he stared at his mother. “A fire? Mom, what is he talking about? My sister’s child… she died. You told me she didn't survive!”
Eleanor turned to her son, her eyes welling with unshed tears, her voice cracking for the first time in front of a stranger. “Julian, listen to me. I did what I had to do to protect this family from a monster.”
“Protect us from whom?” Julian yelled, his voice echoing off the stone buildings.
Before Eleanor could answer, the stranger pulled a burner phone from his pocket, the screen glowing brightly in the dim twilight. He pressed a single button, and a pre-recorded audio file began to play loudly, broadcasting a woman’s terrified screaming over the howling wind.
Julian froze, his hands trembling as he recognized the haunting voice coming from the speaker. It was his late sister, Clara, screaming a warning just moments before her fatal accident.

“She’s coming for the girl, Julian,” the stranger whispered darkly, sliding a cold, unmarked manila envelope across the icy stone toward his feet. “And so are the people who started that fire.”
