Chapter 10 - The Breach

The heavy steel security door of the underground vault groaned in protest as a blinding flash of white-hot plasma sliced through its center. Sparks showered across the concrete floor like a deadly meteor shower, illuminating the chaos of the bunker in strobe-like flashes.
“Move, Julian! Now!” Marcus shouted, using his brass-headed cane to shove Julian and Evelyn toward the dark, narrow opening behind the massive server racks.
Julian didn't hesitate. He scooped Evelyn up into his arms once more, ducking low as another deafening explosion rattled the concrete ceiling, sending dust and debris raining down upon them. The narrow drainage tunnel was dark, damp, and smelled of rusted iron and old river water, but it was their only lifeline.
“Hold on tight to my neck,” Julian whispered frantically into Evelyn’s ear as he scrambled into the blackness of the tunnel.
“I’m right here, Uncle Julian,” the little girl replied calmly, her small arms wrapping securely around his shoulders. Her composure in the face of absolute terror continued to unnerve him, carrying an eerie echo of Clara’s fierce resilience.
Behind them, the massive steel bulkhead finally blew inward with a concussive shockwave that echoed down the subterranean corridors. Heavy tactical smoke filled the air as Victor Sterling’s elite mercenaries poured into the bunker, their weapons raised and laser sights cutting through the haze.
At the center of the advancing squad walked Victor Sterling himself. His tailored wool coat was singed at the hem, and his face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He surveyed the ruined room, his eyes locking instantly on the glowing red computer terminal where the master transfer code was still finishing its upload sequence.
“Stop that terminal!” Victor shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at the screens.
One of the mercenaries rushed forward, slamming a heavy tactical boot into the monitor, shattering the glass and cutting off Dr. Thorne’s digital image mid-sentence with a sickening crunch.
Marcus Vance stood tall beside the ruined desk, leaning heavily on his cane, a cold, mocking smile playing across his weathered lips.
“You’re a little late to the board meeting, Victor,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice dripping with aristocratic disdain. “The transfer is already complete. You don’t own a single brick of this empire anymore.”
Victor slowly walked up to the old man, his chest heaving with fury. He pulled his nickel-plated revolver from his coat pocket and pressed the cold barrel directly against Marcus’s forehead.
“Where is the girl, Marcus?” Victor whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. “Tell me, or I will end your pathetic little resurrection right here and now.”
Marcus didn’t even blink. He looked straight down the barrel of the gun and laughed softly.
“She’s already gone, Victor,” Marcus whispered back. “And she’s taking everything you ever stole back to the light.”
A single gunshot echoed through the subterranean vault, silencing the bunker forever.

Deep inside the dark, winding drainage tunnel, Julian flinched violently at the sound of the gunshot. Tears stung his eyes, but he forced his legs to move faster through the freezing sludge, sprinting blindly toward the faint pinprick of gray daylight shining at the end of the long pipe.
