Chapter 14 - The Final Choice

The air inside the ruined executive boardroom was so thick with tension it felt almost solid. The red LED light on Victor Sterling’s industrial detonator blinked with a steady, hypnotic pulse, casting a sinister glow across his sweat-streaked, frantic face.

“You’re insane, Victor,” Julian said, his voice dangerously low, his muscles coiled to spring despite the mortal danger of the explosive pack strapped just feet away. “You’ve spent your entire life destroying everything in your path for a legacy that was never yours to begin with.”

Victor’s hand trembled over the trigger button, his eyes darting wildly between Julian and the federal agents lining the shattered glass perimeter with their weapons raised.

“Legacy?” Victor spat the word out like poison. “I am the legacy! Your family were aristocrats who inherited their wealth while I built the infrastructure of the modern world! That child doesn’t belong here. She belongs in the ground, right beside her mother!”

Before Julian could react, Evelyn gently shifted in his arms. She didn't scream or cry. With a calm, deliberate movement, she reached down to the silver crescent moon pendant resting against her chest, unhooked it from her dark clothes, and held it out toward Victor in the open palm of her small hand.

Victor blinked, momentarily paralyzed by the child's utter lack of fear. His eyes dropped to the silver pendant, a greedy, desperate flicker of hope crossing his manic features. He took a slow, unsteady step forward, lowering the detonator just a fraction of an inch.

“Give it to me,” Victor whispered, his voice cracking with obsessive desire. “Give me the key.”

“Now!” the federal agent shouted.

In a fraction of a second, the tactical team unleashed a blinding flash-bang grenade into the center of the boardroom. The deafening concussive blast and blinding white light erupted instantly.

Victor screamed, blinded and disoriented, his finger violently spasming downward toward the detonator trigger.

Julian threw himself and Evelyn flat onto the thick wool carpet just as the secondary charge of the explosive pack blew. A wall of intense heat and smoke rolled over them, shattering the remaining perimeter glass windows outward into the freezing night sky.

When the smoke finally cleared and the ringing in Julian’s ears subsided, the boardroom was dead silent.

Victor Sterling lay crumpled unconscious against the smoking remains of the server rack, a pair of heavy federal zip-ties already secured tightly around his wrists by the advancing tactical team.

Julian slowly sat up, clutching Evelyn tightly against his chest, checking her frantically from head to toe. She wasn't
