Chapter 9 - Sirens in the Night

The wail of approaching police sirens cut through the rainy night air, growing louder by the second as flashing red and blue lights painted the high windows of the mansion in chaotic strokes. Julian froze mid-lunge, his hands suspended in the air, his face twisting into an expression of sheer terror as the reality of the flashing lights sank in.
“The police,” Eleanor whispered, her knees buckling slightly before she caught herself against the edge of the mahogany desk. She turned her panicked eyes toward Marcus. “You called them. You deliberately set a trap for my son.”
Marcus slid the gold cufflink securely into an evidence bag, sealing it with practiced precision.
“I did not call the police, Mrs. Sterling,” Marcus replied smoothly, standing up to face her. “The automated silent alarm wired to the archives safe was triggered the moment the heavy door was forced open. It alerts local authorities directly, bypassing the estate's internal network entirely.”
Julian spun around, looking desperately toward the open window that led out to the second-story balcony.
“We have to leave. Now. If the authorities find us in here with the safe blown open and the guard—we’re finished. Mother, tell Marcus to cover for us! He’s done it before!”
“Shut up, Julian!” Eleanor hissed, though her own hands were shaking so violently she could barely keep her diamond rings from clicking together. She turned to Katherine, her voice dropping into a desperate, pleading tone she had never used in her entire life. “Mother… please. You cannot let them drag your own blood out in handcuffs. The scandal will destroy the Sterling name forever.”
Katherine slowly turned away from the empty safe, her black dress making a soft rustling sound as she faced her daughter. Her expression was an impenetrable wall of ancient stone.
“The Sterling name was destroyed the moment you decided greed was heavier than honor, Eleanor,” Katherine said, her voice completely devoid of mercy. “You traded your soul for a ledger, and now you must read the final page.”
Heavy footsteps echoed loudly from the grand foyer as multiple officers rushed through the front double doors, shouting orders and securing the perimeter. A bright beam of a police flashlight swept across the hallway outside the archives, illuminating the terrified faces trapped inside.
Clara stood tall amidst the chaos, her fingers resting lightly on the heavy blue sapphire necklace. The bruises on her throat throbbed, but she felt a profound surge of strength she had never known she possessed.
“Open the door,” a gruff voice called out from the hallway, accompanied by a firm knock on the oak frame. “Police! Step away from the interior and show your hands!”

Marcus looked at Clara, offering a solemn, respectful nod. Then, he reached out and slowly pulled the heavy archives door wide open to face the flashing lights.
