Chapter 4 - The Midnight Breach

The harsh vibration of Marcus’s phone shattered the tense atmosphere of the drawing room, drawing every eye toward the veteran lawyer. Marcus stared at the illuminated screen, his thumb swiping frantically before he pressed it to his ear.
“Speak,” Marcus commanded, his voice tight. A sharp intake of breath followed on the other line, and Marcus’s expression hardened into grim resolve. “Lock down the perimeter server room immediately. Do not let anyone near the physical archives.”
Eleanor crossed her arms, forcing a brittle, defensive smile back onto her face as she tried to regain control of the narrative.
“More corporate melodrama, Marcus? Really? You and my mother can stage whatever theatrical midnight coup you like, but the board meets at nine o’clock tomorrow morning. Without my signature, none of these wild accusations hold any legal weight whatsoever.”
Marcus lowered the phone slowly, his eyes fixed on Eleanor with an unsettling mix of pity and contempt.
“There will be no board meeting at nine o’clock, Mrs. Sterling. The federal securities office just flagged an unauthorized wire transfer attempting to drain twenty million dollars from the primary trust accounts into an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.”
Julian staggered backward, colliding heavily with the edge of the grand piano.
“That’s a lie!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking. “Our accountants handle those accounts! It’s impossible!”
“It was executed using your private master key, Julian,” Marcus replied coldly, holding up his tablet to display the digital footprint. “From the IP address originating inside your private suite upstairs.”
Clara watched the unfolding chaos from her place on the floor, the heavy diamond necklace feeling heavier by the second against her collarbone. The bruises on her neck throbbed in rhythm with her racing heart, but the fog of fear in her mind was rapidly clearing, replaced by a cold, sharp realization of just how far her cousin and aunt were willing to go to protect their stolen luxury.
Katherine didn’t look surprised at all. She turned her head slightly, looking toward the grand staircase that curved upward into the shadows of the second floor.
“They didn’t just want the company, Clara,” Katherine whispered softly, her hand resting gently on Clara’s shoulder. “They wanted to erase every trace of your branch from this family history permanently.”

Suddenly, the overhead crystal chandelier flickered violently once, twice, and then plunged the entire mansion into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
