Chapter 14 - The Final Confrontation

The rain lashed violently against the bulletproof windows of Marcus’s black town car as it tore up the winding, private driveway of the Sterling estate. The grand mansion loomed ahead like a gothic fortress, its towering spires cutting dark silhouettes against the stormy night sky, with every single exterior light dark except for a single, flickering amber glow emanating from the ground-floor library window.

Marcus cut the engine before the car had even fully stopped in front of the grand portico. He reached into his glove compartment, pulling out a heavy steel-barreled service pistol and checking the magazine with a sharp, metallic click.

“Stay behind me,” Marcus instructed Clara as he pushed his door open into the driving rain.

Clara stepped out immediately after him, ignoring the freezing downpour as her silk dress clung to her frame. Katherine followed closely behind, her black mourning dress sweeping the wet cobblestones with absolute, unhurried grace.

They pushed open the heavy front double doors, stepping into an eerily quiet foyer. The bloodstain on the white marble had been hastily wiped away, leaving a faint, smeared pink shadow. From down the hall, the low, muffled sound of shouting echoed from the direction of the hidden sub-basement library.

Marcus led the way, pistol raised, kicking open the mahogany library door with a resounding crash.

The cavernous room was lit only by the dancing flames of the massive stone fireplace. Standing in the center of the Persian rug were Julian and Eleanor, looking disheveled and frantic in their prison-issue clothes, flanked by a tall, cloaked figure whose face remained hidden in the deep shadows.

Julian pointed a shaking finger toward Clara as she walked into the room, his voice cracking with hysterical triumph.

“You’re too late! The past is already exposed!” Julian yelled, stepping back beside the cloaked stranger.

The tall figure slowly lowered his hood, revealing a face deeply scarred on the left side, his dead eyes locking onto Clara with chilling malice.

“Welcome home, little niece,” Thomas whispered, his voice like grinding stones as he reached into his coat and pulled out the original, bloodstained family ledger. “It’s time to settle the family debts in full.”

Before anyone could draw a weapon, Thomas casually flipped open the heavy leather book, pulled out a silver lighter from his pocket, and struck the wheel, sending a bright flame leaping directly toward the fragile, century-old paper.
