Chapter 2 - The Unseen Witness

A heavy silence descended upon the grand salon as the heavy mahogany doors drifted completely open, revealing a towering figure standing quietly in the dimly lit hallway. It was Marcus, the estate’s veteran legal counsel, holding a thick, leather-bound portfolio that smelled faintly of old paper and impending doom. His expression was utterly unreadable, suggesting he had been standing there long enough to witness every devastating word of the confrontation.
Eleanor recovered her composure first, smoothing the front of her expensive blue lace gown with practiced arrogance.
“Marcus, tell me you did not just hear this absolute nonsense from my mother,” she demanded, stepping forward to block his path. “Clara is nothing more than an outsider we took in out of misplaced charity. She has no blood right to the Sterling legacy.”
Marcus did not flinch under Eleanor’s icy glare. Instead, he slowly lifted his gaze past her, locking eyes with Katherine, who remained kneeling beside Clara on the Persian rug.
“The legal reality, Mrs. Sterling, often diverges sharply from family pride,” Marcus replied, his voice calm and deliberate. He stepped fully into the warm light of the chandelier, ignoring Julian, who was still sputtering indignantly near the sofa. “The original charter signed by your late grandfather stipulates that the bearer of the Blue Sapphire during the annual assembly holds absolute veto power over all corporate restructuring. By placing that necklace on Miss Clara, Madam Katherine has effectively transferred controlling shares of Sterling Global directly to her.”
Julian lunged forward, his face flushed with sudden, desperate panic.
“That’s impossible! My grandfather’s will explicitly left the voting trust to Mother and me. We’ve managed this empire for a decade while Clara was just hiding in the guest wing!”
Clara shrank back against the sofa, her fingers trembling as they brushed the cold, faceted surface of the massive blue gemstone resting against her collarbone. She looked up at Katherine, her voice cracking with exhaustion and disbelief.
“Grandmother… I never asked for any of this. I don’t want their company or their money. Please, just let me leave.”
Katherine reached out, her aged hand firmly grasping Clara’s shoulder, anchoring her to the spot with unyielding strength.

“You cannot leave, child,” Katherine whispered softly, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, hidden resolve. “Not now. Because Marcus hasn’t told them the real reason why your father died.”
