Chapter 8 - The Incriminating Crest

The golden cufflink gleamed dully under the harsh fluorescent lights of the archives, its engraved initials mocking the desperate lies Julian had just spewed into the quiet room. Clara stared at the small piece of metal, her breath catching in her throat as she realized every implication of its presence right beside the fallen guard.

Marcus followed Clara’s terrified gaze down to the floor. Without a word, the veteran lawyer reached out with a clean handkerchief, carefully lifting the gold cufflink by its edges to inspect the monogram.

Julian’s face drained of every remaining trace of color. He staggered backward until his spine slammed into the oak bookshelf, his hands trembling violently at his sides.

“That—that doesn’t prove anything,” Julian stammered, his voice rising in frantic desperation. “Anyone could have dropped that! I have dozens of pairs with those initials. They’re custom-made for the entire executive board!”

“Really, Julian?” Marcus asked, his voice dripping with icy skepticism as he held the cufflink up to the light. “Custom-made for the board, yet this exact pair features the rare sapphire inlay worn exclusively by the direct family heirs. And more importantly, your valet polished this very set less than two hours ago.”

Eleanor surged forward, her aristocratic composure entirely shattering as she thrust herself between Marcus and her son.

“Stop this immediate harassment!” she screamed, her voice echoing off the stone walls. “You are framing my son to satisfy some ancient grudge! Mother, tell him to stop this madness right now before I call the police myself!”

Katherine didn’t flinch. She stood motionless beside the open wall safe, her dark eyes fixed on her daughter with a chilling, profound disappointment.

“You want to call the police, Eleanor?” Katherine asked softly, the quiet deadliness of her tone freezing Eleanor in her tracks. “Do you honestly believe the authorities will stop at Julian once they trace the offshore wire transfers back to your Swiss accounts?”

Clara slowly stepped away from the grisly scene, the heavy blue sapphire necklace swinging gently against the gold silk of her dress. The physical bruises on her neck burned with a fierce, hot throbbing, but her mind had never been sharper. She looked at Eleanor and Julian—the two people who had looked down on her, mocked her, and physically silenced her just an hour ago—and saw them for what they truly were: cornered cowards.

“You killed him, didn’t you?” Clara’s voice cut through the heavy air, steady and crystal clear. She pointed a trembling finger at the gold cufflink in Marcus’s hand. “He caught you trying to burn the ledgers that proved you stole my father’s inheritance.”

Julian lunged forward with a snarl of pure rage, abandoning all pretense of innocence.

“You ungrateful little bitch, I should have finished choking you when I had the chance!”

Before Julian could take another step, a deafening crash echoed from the front of the grand mansion, followed immediately by the wail of approaching police sirens.
