Chapter 15 - The New Legacy

The small flame caught the dry, yellowed edge of the century-old paper with a sickening hiss, instantly consuming the corner of the ledger as a foul plume of smoke rose toward the high vaulted ceiling.
Julian laughed hysterically, clapping his hands together in a manic display of triumph.
“It’s over! All your audits, all your legal threats, all your grand plans—gone in thirty seconds!” Julian shouted, stepping toward Thomas as if greeting an ally. “Burn the whole damn house down, Uncle! We’ll start fresh from the ashes!”
Thomas didn’t smile. Instead, he slowly lowered the lighter, letting the flame die out entirely against his bare fingers without flinching, leaving only a small, charred black corner on the very last page of the ledger. He stared coldly at Julian, then shifted his dead eyes to Eleanor, who had frozen mid-step in absolute confusion.
“You really thought I came back to save you, didn’t you, you pathetic cowards?” Thomas sneered, his voice dripping with venom. “You spent thirty years living off stolen dividends, forgetting that the man who exiles his own blood will never hesitate to sacrifice everyone else.”
Eleanor’s face drained of color.
“What—what are you talking about? We’re on the same side!”
Thomas reached into his coat once more, but this time he didn’t pull out a lighter. He tossed a heavy, encrypted flash drive onto the mahogany table right in front of Marcus.
“Everything is on there,” Thomas stated flatly, looking directly at Clara. “Every offshore account, every falsified signature, every bribe paid to bury the truth about my exile—and Julian’s embezzlement. I didn't come to burn the evidence, Julian. I came to deliver it.”
Julian lunged forward in blind panic, trying to grab the flash drive, but Marcus was already there, sweeping the device off the table and pressing the barrel of his pistol firmly against Julian’s chest.
“One more twitch and you’ll join the guard in the morgue,” Marcus warned quietly.
Sirens wailed outside as a dozen police cruisers swarmed the estate grounds, their flashing red and blue lights flooding the library through the tall windows. Heavy footsteps echoed down the grand hallway as federal agents and local police officers poured into the room, their weapons drawn, securing the perimeter in a blur of swift, professional precision.
Thomas didn’t resist. He raised his hands slowly, offering his wrists to the nearest officer without uttering another word, casting one final, lingering look at Clara as the handcuffs snapped shut around his wrists.
Eleanor collapsed onto the Persian rug, weeping silently into her hands as the officers hauled her away, the Sterling empire finally crumbling into dust around her.
Clara stood tall beside Katherine, the heavy blue sapphire necklace catching the amber glow of the fireplace and reflecting it with pure, untarnished brilliance. She reached up, her fingers gently touching her neck where the bruises were already beginning to fade, feeling only the smooth, cold stone of her rightful inheritance.

Katherine placed a warm, steady hand on Clara’s shoulder, offering a soft, genuine smile that had been locked away for thirty long years.
“The crown is yours, Clara,” Katherine whispered softly over the sound of the police outside. “Now, let us build something that will actually last.”
