Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

The mention of Clara’s late father seemed to suck all the oxygen out of the luxurious room. Eleanor froze mid-step, her fingernails digging deep into the fabric of her blue gown, while Julian swallowed hard, his arrogant posture collapsing into sudden, defensive tension. Marcus simply adjusted his grip on the leather portfolio, refusing to meet Eleanor’s suddenly terrified gaze.
“Mother, you promised never to dredge up those unfortunate accusations,” Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping an octave as she stepped toward the older woman in black. “David made his own reckless choices. His financial ruin was entirely his own doing.”
Katherine slowly rose to her feet, towering over her daughter with a cold, unforgiving majesty.
“David was systematically framed by the very people standing in this room,” Katherine stated, each word falling like lead weights upon the polished floor. She turned her piercing stare toward Julian. “Your brother has spent years pretending to be a brilliant young executive, Julian, but every major acquisition on his resume was built on stolen assets belonging to Clara’s family branch.”
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her bruised neck as the fragmented memories of her childhood began to align into a terrifying picture. She looked from Julian’s pale, sweat-beaked face back to Marcus, who gave a slow, solemn nod of confirmation.
“The audit I completed this morning proves every word,” Marcus added, opening the portfolio to reveal rows of hidden bank accounts and falsified signatures. “Miss Clara is not a charity case, Mrs. Sterling. She is the rightful majority shareholder, and your current liquidity depends entirely on whether she chooses to press criminal charges tonight.”
Julian slammed his fist against the mahogany mantlepiece, losing his composure entirely.
“This is a coup! You’re manipulating a traumatized girl to steal everything we’ve built!” He pointed a shaking finger directly at Clara. “She’s weak. She’ll crack under the pressure before the markets open on Monday.”
Katherine stepped in front of Clara, shielding her from Julian’s venomous outburst.
“Weakness is shouting when you are cornered, Julian,” Katherine said quietly, her eyes narrowing. “True power remains silent until the stroke falls.”

Before Julian could lunge forward in a blind rage, Marcus’s phone buzzed loudly against the quiet, vibrating with an urgent notification that made the lawyer’s face instantly drain of color.
