Chapter 12 - The Second Sapphire

The live broadcast from the front gates cast an eerie, flickering blue light across the walls of the police precinct observation room. The man staring directly into the security camera possessed the sharp, aristocratic jawline of the Sterlings, but his eyes were entirely dead, cold pits of vengeance that seemed to pierce right through the screen.

“Thomas,” Katherine choked out, her hand flying to her mouth as she stumbled backward, catching herself against the edge of the metal desk. “My God… he survived.”

Marcus stepped immediately in front of Katherine, his eyes fixed on the television monitor with intense alarm.

“This has to be some kind of sick psychological hoax or an AI-generated deepfake,” Marcus declared, though his shaking hands betrayed his own doubt. “Thomas Sterling drowned in Narragansett Bay in 1994. The coroner signed the death certificate based on recovered clothing!”

“There was no body, Marcus,” Katherine said, her voice trembling violently as tears finally welled in her aged eyes. “His father—my late husband—paid off the local harbormaster to bury the investigation because Thomas showed early signs of a violent, uncontrollable sociopathy. We didn’t lose a son to the sea; we exiled him to protect the family name.”

Clara stared at the screen, a cold shiver running down her spine. The man on the monitor reached out a gloved hand, tapping sharply against the glass of the estate camera three times—*tap, tap, tap*—the exact rhythm the guard had used before he was murdered in the archives.

“He didn't come back for the company,” Clara said quietly, her voice ringing with sudden, terrible clarity. “He came back for the bloodline.”

On the screen, the stranger slowly smiled, revealing a jagged scar running down the left side of his neck—the exact mirror image of the bruises Clara had sustained earlier that evening. He leaned in close to the camera lens, whispering something soundless before turning away and vanishing into the rainy night.

Marcus grabbed his phone, dialing the head of the estate security detail on speed dial.

“Report! Give me a perimeter status right now!” Marcus barked into the receiver.

Static hissed through the speaker for three agonizing seconds before a panicked, ragged voice broke through.

“Sir—the front gates have been bypassed. The intruder didn't break in; he used the master biometric override code. The same code belonging to—”
