Chapter 5 - The Darkness Within

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness drew a sharp, involuntary gasp from Clara, her fingers clutching frantically at Katherine’s black silk sleeve. In the pitch-black salon, the ambient hum of the estate’s climate control died instantly, replaced by an eerie, suffocating quiet that made every breath sound magnified.
“Stay where you are,” Marcus’s voice cut sharply through the dark, followed immediately by the heavy metallic scrape of a small pocket flashlight clicking on.
A narrow beam of white light sliced across the Persian rug, illuminating Eleanor standing rigidly near the fireplace, her face carved in hard shadows, and Julian frantically fumbling with his phone to use its flashlight.
“This is a power grid failure!” Julian yelled over the ringing silence, his voice tight with rising panic. “The storm must have tripped the main transformer outside!”
“We have a dedicated generator that switches on within three seconds of a grid failure,” Marcus countered smoothly, his flashlight beam steadily tracking toward the heavy mahogany doors. “Unless someone manually severed the backup line from the basement junction.”
Eleanor’s voice dripped with venom from the shadows.
“You are accusing us of sabotaging our own home now, Marcus? Your paranoia is reaching pathological levels. Turn that light away from me!”
Katherine stepped out of the beam, her silhouette a towering, immovable pillar of authority.
“Nobody severed the generator lines from the outside, Eleanor,” Katherine said, her voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm that it stopped Julian mid-stride. “The bypass switch is located inside the private wine cellar—a room that only three people in this entire household have the biometric clearance to enter.”
Clara slowly pushed herself up from the floor, the silk of her dress whispering against the hardwood. The heavy blue sapphire necklace felt like a burning brand against her chest. She looked across the dimly lit room, realizing with sudden clarity that the danger wasn't just lurking outside the mansion walls; it was standing right beside them in the dark.
“Julian,” Clara said, her voice small yet remarkably steady as it cut through the gloom. “You were the last one down in the cellar before dinner.”
Julian spun around, his flashlight beam blinding Clara momentarily as he shined it directly into her face.
“Shut your mouth, you little parasite!” Julian snarled, taking a threatening step forward.

Before he could close the distance, the emergency backup generators roared to life with a heavy groan, flooding the grand salon with harsh, glaring white light. Everyone blinked against the sudden brightness, but Marcus was already staring fixedly at the open doorway, where a single drop of fresh blood was slowly dripping onto the pristine marble of the foyer floor.
