Chapter 8: The Arrival of the Patriarch

A gust of cold evening air swept through the grand hallway, carrying with it the scent of rain and cedar. Standing in the doorway was Arthur Vance, the patriarch of the family. Though well into his seventies, his silver hair was cut in a sharp military fade, and his posture was as rigid as the steel beams holding up the mansion. He wore a dark wool overcoat, damp from the storm outside, and his piercing blue eyes—the exact shade of Elena’s—scanned the chaotic scene with an intensity that made everyone in the room hold their breath.
"What in God's name is happening in my foyer?" Arthur’s voice boomed, deep and resonant, cutting through the silence of the massive house like rolling thunder.
Clara visibly shrank against the wall, while Julian, held firmly by the security guard near the side exit, looked as though he wished the marble floor would open up and swallow him whole.
Marcus stopped midway up the grand staircase, his arm still securely around Elena’s waist. He looked down at his father with a grim, tight-lipped expression. "Welcome home, Dad. We have a situation. Julian assaulted Elena, and Clara has been running a multi-year embezzlement scheme using our subsidiary routing numbers."
Arthur slowly removed his leather gloves, placing them deliberately into his coat pocket. He didn't raise his voice, nor did he look surprised. He simply walked further into the foyer, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the stone. He stopped at the foot of the grand staircase, looking up at his daughter’s bruised face and the subtle, protective way she held her swollen belly.
"Julian," Arthur said quietly, his gaze shifting across the room to lock onto the younger man. It wasn't a shout; it was a low, conversational tone that carried a terrifying weight of absolute authority.
Julian swallowed hard, trembling violently under the old man’s gaze. "Arthur... sir... I can explain. It was a misunderstanding—"
"Silence," Arthur commanded, holding up a single finger. He looked back up at Marcus. "Get your sister to the medical suite immediately. Dr. Evans is already on his way from the clinic. I want full security lockdown on the perimeter. No one leaves this estate."
"Already handled, Dad," Marcus nodded, gently guiding Elena up the remaining steps toward the third-floor corridor.

Arthur turned his attention back to Clara, who was now trembling so hard her heels were clicking against the baseboard. He walked toward her slowly, his tall frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over her designer dress.
"Clara Smith," Arthur said, testing her name on his tongue as if it tasted foul. "Your grandfather tried to break this family in 1984, and I broke him instead. What makes you think a pathetic amateur like you could finish what he started?"
