Chapter 14: Dawn at the Estate

The storm had passed by the time the first pale rays of dawn began to paint the eastern horizon in shades of bruised purple and gold. The grand white hallway of the Vance estate was quiet once more, the marble floors polished and gleaming as if nothing had ever disturbed their pristine surface.

Upstairs in the medical suite, Elena lay awake, watching the sunrise filter through the sheer curtains. The pain in her lower back had completely subsided, and the digital fetal monitor beside her bed pulsed with a strong, steady rhythm—a healthy heartbeat that reassured her with every passing second.

The door opened softly, and Marcus walked in, holding a steaming cup of tea. He looked tired, the dark circles under his eyes evidence of a night without sleep, but his expression was calm and resolved.

"How are you feeling, El?" Marcus asked quietly, walking over to place the cup on the bedside table before pulling up the chair.

"Better," Elena answered, turning her head to look at him with a soft, grateful smile. "The contractions stopped around midnight. Dr. Evans checked in via video feed an hour ago; he said the danger has passed."

Marcus let out a long, audible sigh of relief, running a hand through his dark brown hair. "Good. Thank God. The doctor said you can be moved back to your private master suite by this afternoon, provided you maintain strict bed rest for the next week."

"And Julian?" Elena asked, her voice dropping slightly, carrying a touch of melancholy.

"Julian signed the annulment papers just before sunrise," Marcus said evenly, his tone devoid of emotion. "He’s currently on his way to a private airstrip. By noon, he’ll be out of the country, with ten thousand dollars, a single suitcase, and a new name."

Elena looked down at her left ring finger. The gold band was gone; Marcus had removed it while she slept, leaving her skin bare and unencumbered. A profound sense of loss washed over her, mixed with an overwhelming feeling of liberation. The illusion was shattered, but the truth remained.

"And Clara?" Elena asked softly.

"Federal custody," Marcus replied firmly. "She’ll be facing trial for grand larceny and wire fraud. Her family’s remaining assets are being liquidated to cover restitution."

Elena nodded slowly, closing her eyes for a moment as she let the final pieces of the nightmare settle into place. She placed a protective hand over her swollen belly. "We’re going to be okay, aren't we, Marcus?"

"We are," Marcus promised, leaning over to kiss her forehead gently. "The Vance family survives, El. Always."
