Chapter 13: The Unraveling of Clara

Back at the main mansion, the atmosphere in the downstairs study was equally relentless. Clara sat in a velvet armchair, her posture rigid, her face locked in a mask of defiant hostility. Standing across from her was Marcus and two federal agents from the SEC, their briefcases open on the walnut desk, displaying thick files of forensic accounting data.
"Ms. Smith, the audit of the Cayman shell corporation links your personal signature directly to the transfer of fourteen million dollars in Vance Holdings capital over the last eighteen months," the lead federal investigator stated calmly, sliding a document across the desk. "Under federal guidelines, this constitutes grand larceny and corporate securities fraud."
Clara laughed harshly, refusing to look at the paperwork. "Circumstantial evidence. Prove that I wasn't acting on behalf of an authorized subsidiary directive."
Marcus leaned forward, resting his palms flat on the desk. He didn't raise his voice, but his tone was laced with absolute venom. "Clara, your grandfather’s old shipping firm was liquidated by my father in 1984 because your family tried to smuggle contraband through our customs channels. You’ve been holding a forty-year grudge, trying to claw your way back into an empire that threw your ancestors out for good reason."
Clara’s defiant facade finally cracked. A flicker of genuine panic crossed her features, though she quickly tried to mask it behind a sneer. "Your family thinks you own the world, Marcus. You think money and lawyers protect you from everything. But karma comes for everyone eventually."
"Karma isn't going to save you from a twenty-year sentence in a federal penitentiary," Marcus replied coldly. He nodded to the federal agents. "Take her into custody. Process her through the local field office before transferring her to the downtown holding facility."
The two agents stepped forward, their movements practiced and efficient. They placed the steel cuffs around Clara’s wrists, the metallic click echoing sharply off the wood-paneled walls. Clara stood up slowly, her gold satin slip dress catching the dim light as she was led toward the heavy oak doors.

As she passed Marcus, she paused for a fraction of a second, her eyes burning with bitter hatred. "Enjoy your little victory, Marcus. But Elena’s marriage is annulled, her husband is gone, and that baby will grow up without a father. Your bloodline is just as broken as mine."
The heavy doors closed behind her, cutting off her voice. Marcus stood alone in the study, the silence of the room pressing in around him. Despite the total victory, a heavy, uneasy knot remained in his stomach.
