Chapter 5: The Hidden Camera

The silence that followed Elena’s revelation was broken only by the faint ticking of the grandfather clock at the far end of the hallway. Julian opened his mouth to formulate another denial, but stopped as Marcus reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a small, sleek electronic device. It was a digital tablet, its screen glowing brightly in the dim ambient light of the corridor.

"You always were careless with your digital footprints, Julian," Marcus remarked, tapping the screen twice.

A video feed began to play, the audio echoing softly off the marble walls. The camera angle was high, looking down from the recessed lighting fixture in the ceiling of Julian’s private home office. On the screen, Julian and Clara could be seen clearly leaning over a mahogany desk, whispering intensely while scrolling through banking spreadsheets.

"Once the baby is born and the probate court signs off on the transfer, we liquidate everything and move the capital to Zurich," Julian’s voice on the tablet recording said clearly. "Elena won't suspect a thing until the accounts are frozen."

"And if she gets suspicious?" Clara’s voice on the recording asked, laughing lightly.

"We claim she’s postpartum unstable," Julian replied on the screen, his digital double smiling smugly. "It’s a foolproof narrative. Her own family will institutionalize her to protect the company’s reputation."

In the hallway, the real Julian stared at the tablet screen with dilated, terrified eyes. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The evidence was absolute, irrefutable, and captured in high-definition video. Clara gasped, her hand flying to her throat as she realized the security system Julian had installed in his own home had been tapped and decrypted by Vance security weeks ago.

"You... you spied on me," Julian whispered, the fight completely draining out of his limbs.

"We protect our own," Marcus corrected coldly, locking the tablet screen with a sharp click and slipping it back into his pocket. He motioned to the two security guards. "Take Mr. Vance’s keys, his phone, and his passport. Escort him to the guest lodge at the edge of the property and lock the doors. He isn't leaving the estate until the lawyers arrive in the morning."

One of the guards stepped forward immediately, grabbing Julian by the upper arm with a grip of steel. Julian didn't even attempt to pull away; he simply stared at the floor as he was steered toward the side exit.

Elena watched him go, a profound, hollow ache settling deep in her chest. But before she could process the quiet victory, Clara lunged forward with a desperate, hysterical laugh, pulling a manila folder from inside her coat and thrusting it toward Marcus.
