Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

Elena squeezed her eyes shut as another wave of contraction pain rolled through her lower torso, sharper and more insistent than the last. The marble floor seemed to tilt slightly beneath her bare feet. "Marcus... I think the stress... it’s starting early. I need to sit down."

"Get the doctor on the private line, now!" Marcus barked over his shoulder to the remaining security guard, who immediately pulled out a encrypted satellite phone and began dialing frantically.

Clara watched the scene unfold with a cold, spiteful satisfaction, even as she stood trapped between two armed professionals. "Karma’s a bitch, isn't it, Elena? You built an empire on lies, and now your own blood is rebelling against you."

Before Clara could finish her sentence, Marcus turned his head with a look so intensely murderous that Clara instinctively stepped back, biting her tongue. Marcus didn't raise his voice, but the quiet menace in his tone was far more terrifying than any shout.

"If my sister or my niece or nephew suffers so much as a scratch because of your petty, pathetic revenge plot, Clara, you won't spend your life in a federal prison," Marcus whispered, stepping slowly toward her until she hit the wall. "You will spend the rest of your days wishing you had never been born."

Clara swallowed hard, the color draining from her face as she looked into Marcus’s unblinking eyes. She finally realized that the Vance family’s power wasn't just measured in bank accounts and stock certificates; it was anchored in an old, ruthless loyalty that operated far beyond the reach of normal law.

Elena took a deep, shaky breath, fighting through the pain as she grabbed Marcus’s forearm. "Don't, Marcus. Let the authorities handle her. We need to get upstairs. My room is closer."

"We're going to the private medical suite on the third floor," Marcus corrected firmly, signaling the guard to assist on her other side. They carefully lifted Elena, carrying her weight between them as they began the slow, agonizing ascent up the grand white staircase where the violence had first begun just minutes earlier.

Julian watched them ascend from the end of the hall, his own guards holding him firmly in place. As Elena reached the landing, she paused and looked down one last time at her husband—a man she had trusted, loved, and shared a bed with, who had turned out to be nothing more than a shallow, violent opportunist in a white shirt.

Julian opened his mouth to say something—an apology, a plea, a final excuse—but the heavy double doors at the main entrance suddenly flew open again, crashing against the interior walls with a force that shook the crystal chandelier.
