Chapter 12: The Ultimatum

The silence in the rustic guest lodge stretched on, broken only by the crackling of pine logs in the stone fireplace. Julian sat hunched forward in the armchair, his elbows resting on his knees, staring fixedly at the Persian rug as if looking for a way to crawl beneath it.

Arthur stood tall beside the mantelpiece, his gaze steady and unyielding. "Here is how the next twenty-four hours will unfold, Julian. Listen very carefully, because I will only say this once."

Julian looked up slowly, his eyes wide and bloodshot. "What... what do you want from me?"

"By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, federal marshals will arrive with a comprehensive indictment package for financial fraud, conspiracy, and wiretapping," Arthur began, ticking the points off on his fingers with clinical precision. "If you fight the charges, our legal team will ensure you spend the next fifteen years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole."

Julian flinched as if struck physically. "Fifteen years? For financial restructuring?"

"For treason against a family that gave you everything," Arthur corrected coldly. "However, there is an alternative."

Julian leaned forward eagerly, clutching at any thread of hope. "What alternative? I’ll do anything. Name it."

"You will sign an immediate, irrevocable annulment of your marriage, relinquishing all claims to Vance Holdings stock, real estate, and future earnings," Arthur stated, pulling a crisp stack of legal documents from his coat pocket and tossing them onto the oak table in front of Julian. "You will also sign a non-disclosure agreement barring you from ever speaking about Elena, the child, or our corporate operations to the media, private investigators, or law enforcement."

Julian stared at the papers as if they were venomous snakes. "And in exchange?"

"In exchange, our legal team will reclassify your charges from federal felonies to civil breaches of contract," Arthur said smoothly. "You will be escorted to a private airfield at dawn and flown out of the country with a single suitcase and ten thousand dollars in cash. You will start over somewhere else. Under a different name, if you have any sense."

Julian picked up the heavy gold fountain pen resting on the table. His hand shook violently. The realization that his entire elite life, his high-society status, and his dreams of corporate dominance were being reduced to a single suitcase and ten thousand dollars made his chest heave with suppressed panic.

"Ten thousand dollars?" Julian choked out. "That won't even buy me a decent apartment in New York."

"That is ten thousand dollars more than a man who strikes my daughter deserves," Arthur replied, his voice turning to ice. "Sign the papers, Julian. Or wait for the marshals. The choice is yours."
