Chapter 9 - The Mechanic’s Ledger

Julian stared at the small drive in Maya’s hand, the horrifying reality shifting beneath his feet like quicksand. The woman he had grieved, the woman he had believed dead in a fiery ravine in Maine, was standing right in front of him, holding the exact proof that the woman he had just agreed to marry was a calculated sociopath.
"You have proof of attempted murder?" Julian’s voice was barely a rasp, the shock stealing the remaining air from his lungs.
"The mechanic had a crisis of conscience two years ago," Maya explained, stepping closer and placing the drive into Julian's limp palm. "He tried to blackmail Clara, but she had him shipped off to a facility overseas under a false psychiatric hold. My private investigators tracked him down last month. He’s currently cooperating with the U.S. Attorney’s office. Clara didn't just commit white-collar crimes, Julian. She built a criminal enterprise on a foundation of blood."
Julian closed his fist around the drive, his knuckles turning white. The financial betrayal was devastating, but the revelation that Clara had plotted murder—that she had allowed him to mourn a corpse while she smiled beside him at breakfast every morning—turned his stomach.
"Why didn't you come to me sooner?" Julian asked, his voice cracking with a mixture of anguish and disbelief. "Why wait until my wedding day to drop this bomb?"
"Because if I had come forward a year ago, your legal team would have buried me, and Clara would have claimed I was a bitter, unstable ex," Maya replied, her eyes steady and unblinking. "I needed her to reach the apex of her arrogance. I needed her to sign her name to the final corporate restructuring documents—the ones that tied her personal assets directly to the fraudulent transactions. Today was the only day her defenses were completely down, surrounded by cameras and witnesses."
Julian looked around the empty, ruined ballroom. The livestream cameras in the corner were still blinking with red recording lights, broadcasting the aftermath to millions of stunned viewers across the internet. The fairy tale wedding had morphed into a national spectacle.
"We need to get out of here," Julian said, running a hand through his hair. "The press is going to descend on this hotel within minutes."
"Too late," Maya murmured, nodding toward the grand entrance.

The double doors, which had swung open earlier for Julian’s dramatic entrance, were now crowded with a chaotic mob of reporters, photographers, and flashing camera bulbs.
