Chapter 11 - The Subterranean Exit

The elevator car hummed softly as it plummeted five floors beneath the hotel, the digital floor numbers flashing red in the dim lighting. Julian leaned heavily against the mirrored wall, his shoulders slumped as the adrenaline drain left him feeling hollowed out and exhausted.

Maya stood beside him, watching his reflection with quiet concern. She reached out, her fingers gently touching his sleeve. "You did the right thing by walking away, Julian. Staying with her would have destroyed everything you built."

"I built it on a lie, Maya," Julian muttered, staring at his own pale reflection in the glass. "Every contract, every successful quarter, every milestone—it was all manipulated by a woman who apparently thought nothing of murder to get what she wanted. How do I even know my own history anymore?"

"You know who you are," Maya said softly. "You're the engineer who stayed up nights sketching algorithms on napkins while Clara was busy learning how to forge signatures. Don't let her contamination make you doubt your own foundation."

The elevator chimed, and the doors slid open to reveal the cavernous, concrete expanse of the subterranean parking garage. The air was cool and smelled faintly of exhaust fumes and damp pavement. A sleek black sedan with tinted windows was idling near the exit ramp, its headlights cutting through the dimness.

Julian stepped out of the elevator, his shoes clicking against the concrete. "Whose car is that?"

"Mine," Maya replied, walking toward the passenger side. "My security detail is waiting outside the garage. We need to get you to the federal prosecutor's office before Clara's defense team starts scrubbing the secondary servers."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his keys dangling from his fingers. "Maya, wait. Before we get into that car, there’s something I need to know. If you knew Clara was setting you up five years ago... why didn't you warn me back then? Why disappear completely instead of coming to me?"

Maya turned back, her expression tightening with a sudden, painful vulnerability. She took a slow step toward him, the ambient hum of the garage fading into the background.

"Because Clara didn't just threaten me," Maya whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "She had proof that if I went to you, she would release compromised medical records proving your father's signature on his will was forged."
