Chapter 8 - The Empty Altar

The double doors swung shut behind the federal agents and their prisoner, leaving the Starlight Ballroom in an eerie, suffocating silence. The thousands of dollars spent on floral arrangements, ambient lighting, and catering now felt like a grotesque monument to vanity. Little Lily had long since vanished, scooped up by a terrified bridesmaid who had fled down the service stairs at the first sign of trouble.

Julian stood alone near the altar, the manila envelope still gripped in his hand. The weight of the past decade crashed down on him—every missed warning sign, every convenient excuse Clara had made for Maya's sudden disappearance, every sleepless night he had spent trying to appease a woman who was quietly gutting his life's work.

Maya walked slowly down the remaining steps, her red silk dress whispering against the carpet. She stopped a few feet from him, her expression a complex mix of lingering affection, sorrow, and exhaustion.

"You look older, Julian," Maya said gently, breaking the heavy silence.

Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle, running a hand over his face. "Five years of mourning a ghost tends to age a man. Especially when the ghost turns out to have been murdered on paper by the person sleeping next to him."

"I had to leave, Julian," Maya said, her voice dropping defensively. "Clara had intercepted threats against my life. She was working with our chief competitor to force a hostile takeover. When my car went off that cliff, I wasn't inside it. My assistant was—and Clara knew it. She planted my ID in the wreckage to frame me and clear her own path."

Julian’s head snapped up, his eyes widening in horror. "What are you talking about? That wasn't an accident?"

May you like

"No," Maya answered, pulling a small, encrypted thumb drive from her crimson handbag and holding it out toward him. "Clara didn't just steal my identity and my bank accounts. She attempted murder. And these are the encrypted emails proving she paid the mechanic to cut the brake lines."
