Chapter 6 - The Digital Doomsday

Julian stopped cold, his hand tightening around the manila envelope until the edges crumpled. The patent portfolio wasn't just his livelihood; it was the foundation of the entire tech firm, holding proprietary algorithms that sustained hundreds of jobs and millions in venture capital. If those files leaked to regulatory authorities or competitors, the fallout would trigger corporate annihilation.

"Put the drive down, Clara," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing monotone that brooked no argument. "You're already looking at federal wire fraud. Adding corporate espionage to the docket is a one-way ticket to a maximum-security facility."

"Let it burn," Clara laughed, though the sound was manic and desperate. Her thumb hovered over the tiny release switch of the flash drive. "If I don't get to wear this ring, if I don't get to stand at the top of this mountain, nobody does. You think your precious company matters without me? I ran the operations while you played the visionary. I know where every single buried body is hidden—starting with the bribe we paid the zoning board for the downtown headquarters."

Maya stepped forward, her expression entirely unreadable. "You really think you're the smartest person in the room, don't you, Clara? Did you honestly believe I walked back into this building without insuring myself against your paranoia?"

Clara hesitated, her thumb freezing over the drive. "What are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the federal agents currently locking down the server room in the basement," Maya said calmly, checking her diamond-encrusted wristwatch. "While you were busy crying on cue for the flower girl and playing the tragic bride, my legal team was executing a federal search warrant based on the financial trails you left behind. The servers are already mirrored. Your flash drive is nothing more than a very expensive piece of plastic."

Clara’s face lost every trace of color. The phone in her pocket began to vibrate incessantly, buzzing like an angry insect—not a text, but a flood of emergency alerts from the corporate office downstairs.

Before Clara could process the betrayal, heavy boots echoed at the top of the grand staircase. Two men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing federal insignia stepped onto the mezzanine, looking down at the glittering ballroom with absolute authority.
