Chapter 5 - Ink and Blood

The seal of the envelope tore with a dry, ripping sound that echoed loudly in the tense stillness of the ballroom. Julian pulled out a sheaf of heavy legal paper, his eyes scanning the columns of numbers, bank routing codes, and signatures. Every document bore Clara’s immaculate, looping signature, dated long before Maya’s memorial service, funneling millions into an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands.

"It's all here," Julian whispered, the color draining entirely from his face until he looked as pale as Clara’s lace dress. He looked up, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and pure rage. "You didn't just replace her, Clara. You liquidated her life while she was still breathing."

"She was already gone, Julian!" Clara cried out, abandoning all pretense of grace as she lunged toward him, trying to snatch the papers from his hands. "She left you! She took the initial seed money and ran to Europe! I just... I just salvaged what was left so we wouldn't lose the company! I saved you!"

"By stealing my signature?" Julian shoved her away, not violently, but with a cold finality that sent Clara stumbling back against the floral altar. "By orchestrating a ghost story so you could step into her shoes without waiting for the probate court?"

Maya stepped between them, her presence commanding the space. "She didn't just salvage the company, Julian. Look at the incorporation date of the new parent firm. It was filed three days before my car went off that cliff in Maine. Clara didn't inherit my life; she engineered the vacancy."

The livestream camera in the corner clicked softly, zooming in on Clara’s face as the raw truth registered across the digital landscape, broadcasting to millions of viewers who had tuned in for a fairy tale and found a crime thriller instead.

Clara wiped a tear from her cheek, her expression twisting from panic into a calculated, venomous smile. She straightened her bodice, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "You think you’ve won, Maya? You think the world is going to sympathize with a woman who hid in the shadows for five years while her husband wept?"

Clara reached behind her back, her fingers slipping into the hidden pocket of her wedding gown, pulling out a small, metallic flash drive.

"If I go down for fraud," Clara said smoothly, holding up the drive, "I’m taking your entire patent portfolio down with me, Julian. Every stolen design, every offshore bribe. I have the master keys to the server."
