Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The chandelier of the Starlight Ballroom cast a billion diamond shards over Clara’s ivory lace gown, but the brilliance felt like a refrigerated morgue. Her fingers, manicured and trembling, hovered in midair where she had instinctively reached out toward Lily. The eight-year-old flower girl clutched a glowing black smartphone to her chest like a shield, tears carving dark tracks through the dust on her flushed cheeks. Around them, the scent of crushed white hydrangeas hung suffocatingly heavy in the silence of the halted ceremony.

Julian burst through the double doors, the heavy oak panels swinging violently against the floral wreaths. His black tuxedo bowtie was askew, his chest heaving with desperate breath as he crossed the polished parquet floor in frantic strides.

"What happened?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking as he dropped to his knees beside Lily. "Lily, baby, what is it? Why are you crying?"

Lily choked back a sob, burying her face in Julian’s lap while her small hands refused to let go of the phone. "She... she told me to look at it," the child whimpered, pointing a shaking finger at Clara. "The phone buzzed. It kept buzzing."

Julian pried the device from the child’s stiff fingers, his expression shifting from frantic panic to chilling confusion. His eyes locked onto the illuminated screen. The text message burned against the dark OLED display in bold, unmerciful letters: Why did you stop the wedding? I'm already upstairs.

Clara stepped forward, her eyes wide with a terror that bypassed words. "Julian, listen to me. Don't look up."

"Upstairs?" Julian whispered, his head snapping toward the grand marble staircase that spiraled into the shadows of the mezzanine.

Footsteps echoed softly from the landing above, slow and deliberate.
