Chapter 2 - Echoes on the Marble

The rhythmic sound of heels clicking against the upper balcony sent a collective shiver through the frozen ballroom. Julian stood up slowly, the smartphone still gripped tightly in his palm like a detonator. He looked from the dark screen to Clara, whose breath came in shallow, panicked gasps that visibly shook the intricate lace of her bodice.

"Clara," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, unfamiliar register. "Who is upstairs?"

"I don't know," Clara lied, her voice pitching slightly too high, betraying the decade of carefully constructed secrets they had built together. "It’s a prank, Julian. Someone’s playing a sick joke on our livestream. Look at the camera feeds in the back; the trolls always find a way in."

"That wasn't a public comment stream," Julian fired back, taking a step toward her. His eyes narrowed, stripping away the polished groom persona to reveal the desperate, betrayed man underneath. "That was a direct SMS to Lily’s phone. A phone that only three people in this room have the number for. You, me, and your sister."

"My sister is in Chicago!" Clara snapped, finally dropping the fragile bride facade. She took a fierce step forward, her fingernails digging into her palms. "Are you really accusing me on our wedding day? Over a text from an unknown number?"

"Then let's go up and check," Julian challenged, turning sharply toward the grand staircase.

"No!" Clara shrieked, lunging forward to grab his tuxedo sleeve. "Julian, please. Don't go up there. Whatever is waiting at the top of those stairs will destroy everything we've worked for."

Julian froze, slowly turning his head to look down at her desperate grip. "Everything we've worked for? Or everything you've fabricated?"

Before Clara could answer, a shadow detached itself from the balcony railing above, stepping into the golden pool of the chandelier light.
