Chapter 13 - The Phantom Successor

Julian froze, the keys slipping from his slackened fingers and clattering against the concrete floor. "An unknown third party? Who could possibly have power of attorney over my corporate accounts besides me and Clara?"
"That's what we're about to find out," Maya said, bending down to retrieve the keys and handing them back to him. "The corporate bylaws dictate that if both primary signatories are incapacitated or under federal arrest, authority defaults to the holder of the master administrative key—a key that was supposed to be destroyed when our old partnership dissolved."
"The master key," Julian whispered, the color returning to his face in a rush of sudden, terrifying clarity. "Arthur."
Maya’s eyes widened in shock. "Your former mentor? Arthur retired from the board six years ago. He moved off the grid to the Pacific Northwest."
"Or so we were led to believe," Julian said, his mind racing as every puzzle piece suddenly snapped into a horrific new configuration. "Arthur was the one who introduced Clara to the firm. He was the one who encouraged me to put her on the executive board. If Arthur holds the master administrative key, then he wasn't just a mentor—he was the architect of the entire scheme."
Maya grabbed Julian’s arm, her grip fierce. "If Arthur has control of the master keys, he can drain every patent portfolio, liquidate our international holdings, and transfer the intellectual property to our primary competitor before the federal agents even reach the basement."
"We have to get to the downtown data center before the automated transfer completes," Julian said, his exhaustion instantly vanishing beneath a surge of desperate adrenaline. He unlocked the passenger door of Maya’s sedan and slid inside, slamming the door shut.
Maya rushed around to the driver's side, starting the engine with a roar that echoed off the concrete walls of the garage. The black sedan surged forward, accelerating up the exit ramp and bursting out into the cool night air of the city.
