Chapter 12 - The Forged Legacy

The words hung in the damp air of the garage like a physical blow. Julian stared at Maya, the blood draining from his face for the second time that day. His father’s estate, the modest family home and the initial patents that had launched his career, had been the bedrock of his entire life’s work.
"My father's will?" Julian’s voice dropped to a choked whisper. "My father trusted Clara. He thought she was an angel."
"She made sure he did," Maya said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "She spent two years gaining his confidence while his health was failing. When he passed away, she altered the distribution clauses so that the core intellectual property rights went straight into a shell corporation she controlled. If I had exposed her then, she would have destroyed your reputation by claiming you were the one who forged the documents to cheat your siblings out of their inheritance."
Julian gripped the edge of the nearest concrete pillar, his knuckles scraping against the rough surface. The illusion of his past life was completely gone, replaced by a horrifying architecture of manipulation that spanned nearly a decade. Clara hadn't just stolen his present; she had stolen his memories, weaponized his family legacy, and turned his grief into a leash.
"And my siblings?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with suppressed fury. "Did they know?"
"They were paid off with hush money and non-disclosure agreements under the guise of corporate settlements," Maya explained gently. "Clara made sure they were financially comfortable enough never to ask questions."
Before Julian could process the full scope of the betrayal, the headlights of the idling sedan flickered twice—a pre-arranged signal from the security team inside.
Maya glanced toward the car, then back at Julian, her expression turning urgent. "We don't have time to unpack the past right now, Julian. The federal agents are securing the primary servers, but Clara’s legal team just filed an emergency injunction to freeze all corporate accounts—including your personal payroll."
Julian let out a bitter, exhausted laugh. "So by morning, I’ll technically be broke."
May you like
"Worse than that," Maya said, her voice dropping to a grave warning. "Clara’s emergency filing didn't just freeze the accounts. It transferred signatory control to an unknown third party."
