Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Open

The giant LED screens flanking the stage flickered from black to a crystal-clear, high-definition feed of the second-floor corridor. There stood Elena, her blonde hair slightly disheveled, staring directly into the lens of the hidden dome camera above the arched window. In her lap was an open military-grade terminal, the screen reflecting a cascade of green cascading code that confirmed she had just bypassed the hotel’s entire firewall.
A murmur of shock rolled through the ballroom like a breaking wave. Guests turned around in their seats, craning their necks to look at the massive displays, then whispering furiously to one another.
On the stage, Arthur’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he smoothly recovered his composure. He slowly withdrew his hand from the white gift box, turning his attention away from the open lid and toward the giant screens.
"Well, it appears our guest of honor couldn't bear to stay away from the proceedings," Arthur said into the microphone, his tone dripping with patronizing amusement. "Elena, darling, if you wanted a front-row seat, you only had to ask."
Julian Vance didn't waste a second. He pulled the blue cable from the box, snapped his black leather briefcase shut with a sharp double click, and stepped down from the stage. He didn't run, but his purposeful march toward the side exit doors made it abundantly clear that a retrieval team was already en route to the hallway.
Inside the corridor, Elena stared up at the dome camera, realizing too late that the terminal she had plugged into the wall junction wasn't a secure tunnel—it was a honeypot designed to broadcast her exact location the moment she touched it.
"You manipulative bastard," Elena whispered to herself, slamming the lid of her terminal shut.
She turned on her heel and bolted down the hallway toward the service stairs, her heels clattering wildly against the marble. But before she could reach the heavy fire door, the opposite end of the corridor flooded with armed private security guards. They moved in a synchronized wedge formation, cutting off her only escape route.
Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She looked back over her shoulder. Julian Vance had just stepped out of the ballroom’s side exit, blocking the path back the way she came. She was trapped between two walls of corporate muscle, with nowhere left to run.
Julian stopped ten paces away, adjusting his cufflinks with infuriating calm.
"End of the line, Elena," Julian said smoothly, stepping closer. "Arthur wants the drive back. Now."
Elena slowly raised her hands, her fingers curling tightly around the metallic edge of her laptop case. "You won't get what's on this drive, Julian. Not legally, and certainly not alive."
Julian smirked, raising two fingers to signal the guards to close in. "Who said anything about legal?"

Suddenly, the fire door beside Elena blew inward with a violent crash, and a shadowy figure grabbed her by the arm, yanking her backward into the stairwell just as the security guards charged forward.
