Chapter 10 - The Standoff in the Aisles

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered, casting a harsh glare over the rows of towering metal shelving units. Julian Vance stopped ten paces away from the oak reading table, his hands neatly tucked into the pockets of his charcoal suit jacket. He didn't look rushed or panicked; rather, he wore the calm, self-assured expression of a man who knew he held every winning card in the deck.

"Judge Miller," Julian said, offering a polite, mocking nod of his head. "It is deeply disappointing to see a man of your judicial standing conspiring with corporate fugitives in the dark basement of a municipal building."

Judge Miller didn't flinch, standing tall behind the oak table with his hands resting firmly on the leather ledger. "I am here to ensure the law is upheld, Mr. Vance, not to cater to hostile takeover tactics orchestrated by Arthur Sterling."

"The law was settled three years ago when Elena signed the preliminary restructuring agreement," Julian replied smoothly, taking a slow step forward. The two security guards flanking him fanned out slightly, their hands hovering near their utility belts. "That white gift box upstairs wasn't just a theatrical prop. It was a formal legal notification. Once the midnight hour strikes, the contract automatically executes, transferring all remaining assets to Arthur's personal holdings."

Elena stepped in front of the laptop, shielding the screen with her body. "You're lying, Julian. The liability clause was added fraudulently without board approval. Marcus has the digital proof right here on this drive."

Julian chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Proof? Elena, look around you. Who do you think owns the municipal database server farm located three floors directly beneath our feet?"

Marcus’s face drained of color. He spun around, staring at the concrete wall behind the shelving units. "The municipal IT grid... it's tied to the corporate mainframe."

"Of course it is," Julian smiled, pulling out his silver tablet and tapping the screen twice. "Arthur anticipated every single one of your moves months ago. The moment you plugged that shadow key into the archive terminal, you opened a secure data tunnel straight back to our corporate servers. The upload is already complete. You didn't bypass our security—you handed us the final verification key on a silver platter."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at the laptop screen. The cascading green code had suddenly frozen, replaced by a large, blinking red banner that read: TRANSFER COMPLETE. SYSTEM LOCKED BY MASTER ADMIN.

"No," Elena whispered, her hands shaking as she slammed her fingers against the keyboard. The keys were entirely unresponsive. The system had been completely locked down from an external source.

Judge Miller slammed his hand down on the leather ledger, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "If that transfer executes, it constitutes corporate fraud on a massive, systemic scale. I will issue a federal bench warrant for Arthur Sterling's arrest before the clock strikes twelve."

Julian’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened glare. He raised his hand, signaling the security guards to move in. "You can issue all the warrants you want from a prison cell, Judge. Grab the laptop and detain them."

Before the guards could take a single step forward, the entire archive room plunged into sudden, absolute darkness as the overhead lights died with a sharp electric pop.
