Chapter 12 - The Race Against the Clock

The grand lobby of the municipal archives building was completely deserted, bathed in the eerie, pale glow of moonlight streaming through the massive arched glass windows facing the downtown plaza. Elena, Marcus, and Judge Miller burst through the stairwell door, their breathing heavy as their footsteps echoed across the marble floor.
"We need a vehicle, and we need it now," Elena said, pulling her phone out of her clutch. The screen was still functional, displaying the ticking digital countdown in red numbers at the top: 11:48 PM. Twelve minutes left.
"My car is parked in the restricted judicial bay around back," Judge Miller said, pulling a heavy brass key ring from his coat pocket. "It has a direct, secure satellite uplink to the federal district court. If we get there before midnight, we can file the emergency injunction to freeze Arthur's corporate assets permanently."
"Will it hold up against Julian's legal team?" Elena asked as they pushed through the heavy glass revolving doors out into the cool midnight air.
"Julian won't have a legal team left once the SEC audit flags the purged offshore accounts," Marcus said, opening the rear door of the sleek black sedan parked in the bay. He tossed his toolkit onto the floorboard and slid into the front passenger seat. "Arthur's entire financial empire was built on those unverified endowment transfers. Without them, his company is effectively insolvent."
As Judge Miller turned the ignition and the sedan roared to life, a pair of matte-black SUVs rounded the corner of the plaza at high speed, tires screeching against the asphalt. High-beam headlights blinded them instantly, washing the sedan in glaring white light.
"They found us," Marcus cursed, looking back through the rear window. "Hold on!"
Judge Miller slammed the car into drive, flooring the accelerator. The sedan surged forward, leaping out of the municipal bay just as the leading SUV tried to block the exit ramp, clipping their rear bumper with a loud, metallic crunch of grinding steel.
The impact threw Elena against the side door, but she recovered instantly, grabbing the dashboard to steady herself. "Drive, Judge! Don't let them box us in!"
The sedan sped down the rain-slicked downtown boulevard, weaving erratically through sparse late-night traffic with the black SUVs hot on their tail, their engines roaring like enraged beasts in the quiet night air.
In the passenger seat, Marcus stared down at his laptop screen, watching a progress bar tick upward as a final hidden file decrypted itself from the secure drive.
"Elena," Marcus said, his voice tense as he pointed to the screen. "There's something else inside the encrypted partition. Something Arthur didn't want anyone to find, even Julian."

Elena leaned forward, squinting at the screen as the file name resolved into view: The Catherine Protocol.
