Chapter 11 - The Blackout in the Archives

The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute. The only illumination came from the faint, dying blue glow of Elena’s locked laptop screen and the red indicator light on Julian’s silver tablet.

"Secure the terminals!" Julian’s voice cut sharply through the dark, echoing off the metal shelving units. Heavy boots slammed against the concrete floor as the security guards rushed forward into the aisle.

Marcus grabbed Elena by the arm, yanking her down behind the heavy oak reading table just as a high-voltage taser dart hissed through the air above them, embedding itself deep into a wooden chair leg with a sharp zap of electrical current.

"Stay low!" Marcus hissed, pulling a small tactical EMP device from his pocket.

"Marcus, what are you doing?" Elena whispered urgently, her hands gripping his sleeve. "The transfer is already complete. Locking the system didn't stop them—we played right into their hands!"

"We didn't play into their hands," Marcus whispered back, a fierce, determined look in his eyes in the faint red glow. "The shadow key wasn't a bypass for their system, Elena. It was a logic bomb. The moment Julian’s server accepted the upload, it triggered a complete data wipe of Arthur’s primary offshore accounts."

Across the dark aisle, the sound of Julian tapping frantically on his tablet broke through the tense silence.

"Sir! We have a critical system error!" one of the guards shouted, his voice laced with sudden panic. "The primary offshore accounts are purging! The database is scrubbing itself clean in real-time!"

Julian’s voice rose, dropping its calm composure entirely. "Disconnect the mainframe! Cut the power to the server room immediately! If that data goes, the entire merger collapses!"

Heavy running footsteps echoed down the aisle as Julian and his guards scrambled away from the reading table, abandoning their advance to race toward the emergency server access door at the rear of the archive room.

Judge Miller poked his head up from behind a towering stack of municipal ledgers, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with a steady hand. "It appears your friend Marcus brought more than just a shadow key, Ms. Sterling."

"He brought a wrecking ball," Elena said, a slow, triumphant smile breaking across her face. She stood up from behind the oak table, her fingers reaching out to grab the laptop case. "Let's go. We need to get upstairs before the emergency generators kick in and they realize the purge can't be stopped."

As they sprinted toward the opposite exit leading up to the grand lobby of the municipal building, the digital clock on the wall flickered: 11:45 PM.
