Chapter 4 - The Darkness Before the Flash

The sudden plunge into darkness triggered a collective gasp that rippled through the hundreds of guests seated at the candlelit tables. For three agonizing seconds, the only illumination in the grand ballroom came from the pulsing amber LED light on the white gift box resting upon the stage. Its rhythmic glow cast long, distorted shadows across Arthur’s unbothered face and Julian’s rigid posture.

"Stay in your seats," Arthur’s voice boomed through the microphone, amplified by an emergency battery backup. "A minor power fluctuation. The auxiliary generator will engage shortly."

In the dim amber glow, Julian’s hands remained steady over the digital interface pad connected to the mysterious box. He didn't panic; instead, his fingers moved with practiced speed, tapping a sequence of override commands into the small screen.

"Power routing is stable on our end," Julian muttered quietly to Arthur. "Someone just tripped the main breaker from the basement control room."

"Find out who," Arthur instructed softly, his eyes scanning the shadowed crowd below.

Outside in the corridor, the emergency red exit lights hissed to life, casting a bloody hue across the marble floor. Elena stood frozen in the alcove, her breath catching in her throat as the lights went out. The darkness offered a momentary shield, but she knew it wouldn't last. She heard the heavy boots of the security guards slowing their pace, confused by the sudden blackout.

Her phone buzzed violently in her hand. A text message flashed on the screen from an unknown local number: The basement breaker didn't trip. It was manually cut from the inside.

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked toward the stairwell leading down to the service levels, debating whether to run or hide. If someone had infiltrated the basement, they were either trying to stop Julian from opening the box or helping him secure the data transfer before the authorities arrived.

Back in the ballroom, a loud clack echoed through the sound system.

The emergency generators kicked in with a deafening roar, flooding the room with harsh, fluorescent-tinted light. The sudden brightness made everyone squint, blinking against the glare. On the stage, Julian slammed his palm down onto the interface pad’s final execution key.

The amber LED light on the brass padlock turned a brilliant, solid green.

With a mechanical whir that sounded remarkably like a heavy vault door unlatching, the silver silk ribbon fell slack as the padlock sprang open on its own. Arthur smiled, reaching out his hand to lift the lid of the white gift box.

And then, every screen mounted on the ballroom walls flickered on, displaying a live security feed of Elena standing alone in the hallway, holding a smoking laptop that had just been wired directly into the hotel’s master surveillance network.
