Chapter 14 - The Final Obstacle

The acrid smell of burnt gunpowder and smoking rubber filled the cabin of the wrecked sedan. Elena spat out a mouthful of bitter dust, coughing as she unbuckled her seatbelt and shoved her airbag aside. Beside her, Marcus shook his head, clearing his vision, while Judge Miller struggled to push open his jammed driver-side door.

Outside, the heavy rain hammered against the roof of the car. Through the shattered side window, Julian Vance approached with steady, unhurried strides, the metal crowbar gripped tightly in his hand. The two private security guards who had accompanied him fanned out, training heavy tactical flashlights on the wrecked vehicle to blind anyone inside.

"Game over, Elena," Julian’s voice echoed through the open air, cold and devoid of any warmth. He slammed the edge of the crowbar against the front passenger window glass, cracking it into a spiderweb pattern with a loud, brittle snap. "Hand over the laptop. Now."

"We're right outside the federal courthouse, Julian," Elena snapped back, her voice ringing with fierce defiance as she reached into her coat pocket and gripped her phone. "The injunction is already filed. You can't stop what's coming."

Julian raised the crowbar higher, preparing to smash the window completely. "The injunction means nothing if there's no one left to sign the final docket before midnight. Open the door!"

Before Julian could bring the crowbar down, the heavy oak double doors of the federal courthouse behind him swung open with a resounding thud.

A tall figure stepped out onto the wide stone landing, silhouetted against the bright interior lights of the grand lobby. It was Catherine, still wearing her structured white strapless wedding gown, her veil clutched tightly in one hand and her smartphone glowing brightly in the other.

"Step away from the car, Julian," Catherine’s voice cut through the rainy night air with absolute, chilling authority.

Julian froze, lowering the crowbar slightly as he spun around to face the courthouse steps. "Catherine? What are you doing out here? You should still be in the ballroom."

"I received the file, Julian," Catherine said, walking down the marble steps into the rain without hesitation, her pearl earrings catching the streetlamps' glow. She held up her phone, displaying the decrypted pages of the Catherine Protocol for all to see. "I know about the merger clause. I know about the asset transfers. And most importantly, I know that Arthur planned to leave me bankrupt before the night was over."

Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure frustration. He took a step toward her, raising his hand defensively. "Catherine, you don't understand what you're holding. That's classified corporate—"

"It's corporate fraud," Judge Miller interrupted, finally managing to kick his car door open and stepping out into the rain, holding his judicial leather ledger high in the air. The digital clock on the courthouse tower flashed neon red in the distance: 11:59 PM.

Julian whipped his head around, staring in horror at the glowing numbers of the clock. One minute left until midnight.

Marcus kicked his door open as well, sliding out onto the wet pavement with the laptop in hand. He looked straight at Elena, his eyes wide with urgency.

"Elena, look at your phone," Marcus shouted over the rain. "Arthur is broadcasting a live override from the ballroom. He's executing the final clause right now!"
