Chapter 13 - The Catherine Protocol

The sedan surged past the neon-lit storefronts of the downtown commercial district, the rain turning into a steady, heavy downpour that slicked the asphalt and blurred the swirling red taillights of the pursuing SUVs. Inside the car, the harsh glow of Marcus’s laptop screen illuminated the tense angles of his face as he opened the newly decrypted file.
"What is the Catherine Protocol?" Elena asked, leaning over the center console as the car took a sharp, screeching turn around a corner, leaving the pursuing SUVs momentarily stalled behind a delivery truck.
Marcus scrolled rapidly through lines of encrypted financial ledgers and scanned legal documents. "It’s not just a corporate document, Elena. It’s an insurance policy. Arthur didn't marry Catherine out of affection tonight. The entire wedding was a staged legal maneuver designed to transfer her family's shipping empire into his holding company under the exact same liability clause he's trying to force on you."
Judge Miller gripped the steering wheel tightly, his eyes darting between the dark road ahead and the rearview mirror. "That would constitute systemic asset fraud on an international scale. If Catherine signed that prenuptial agreement under duress, the marriage contract itself is legally voidable."
"She didn't know," Elena said, a chill running down her spine as she remembered the pale, vacant expression on Catherine’s face standing beside Arthur on the ballroom stage. "She thought it was just a high-society wedding. Arthur trapped her the exact same way he tried to trap me three years ago."
Marcus tapped the export button on the laptop interface. "I'm routing the entire file directly to Catherine’s personal encrypted device, along with copies to the federal prosecutor's office. If she opens it before midnight, the entire foundation of Arthur's merger collapses from the inside out."
"Do it," Elena said firmly.
A sharp chime echoed from the laptop speakers, indicating the data packet had been successfully transmitted across the secure channel.
Judge Miller glanced at the dashboard clock: 11:54 PM.
"We are two minutes away from the federal district courthouse," Judge Miller announced, pressing his foot down harder on the gas pedal as the grand stone pillars of the judicial building came into view down the wide boulevard.
Suddenly, a massive black SUV slammed violently into the passenger side of their sedan, spinning the car three hundred and sixty degrees across the wet asphalt. The vehicle slammed to a halt against a concrete planter right in front of the courthouse steps, airbags deploying with a thick cloud of white smoke filling the cabin.

Elena coughed, waving the smoke away as she pushed her airbag aside. Through the shattered side window, she saw Julian Vance stepping out of the leading SUV, holding a heavy metal crowbar in his right hand as he marched straight toward their car.
