Chapter 8

As the department heads filed out of the conference room in stunned silence, carrying the heavy realization of Clara’s deception, the atmosphere shifted from confrontation to reconstruction. Michael remained near the door, shifting nervously from foot to foot, unsure if his own cooperation had bought him safety or merely postponed his termination.

"Michael," Charlotte said, not looking up as she packed the ledgers back into her leather bag. "You stay. We need to talk about the night my grandfather’s study was ransacked."

Clara, who had refused to leave the room, let out a sharp, brittle laugh. "You still obsessed with that old conspiracy? Your grandfather died of a weak heart, Charlotte. The coroner signed off on it. You can't rewrite medical history just because you can't accept natural mortality."

Charlotte stopped moving. She slowly raised her head, locking her intense eyes onto Clara’s face. The air in the room grew noticeably colder. "My grandfather had the heart of an ox. He swam laps in the hotel pool every single morning until the day before he died. But more importantly, Clara... I never mentioned how he died. How did you know the coroner's report listed a weak heart?"

Clara froze. The color instantly vanished from her cheeks, leaving her looking stark and terrified beneath the opulent chandelier light. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She had trapped herself in her own defensive web, revealing an intimate knowledge of a death that had officially been ruled private family business.

Michael took an involuntary step backward toward the exit, his eyes widening in horror as he connected the dots that had remained hidden for a decade. "My God," Michael breathed. "You were there."

"I was running this place!" Clara shrieked defensively, her voice echoing off the oak walls. "I had every right to be in the family wing!"

"The family wing was sealed off by probate law until the reading of the will," Charlotte replied, her voice dangerously quiet. She walked slowly toward Clara, closing the distance between them with deliberate, measured steps. "Yet items were missing from his safe that very night. Including the original master deed that you spent five years trying to legally invalidate."

Clara tried to maintain her defiant posture, but her shoulders trembled beneath the heavy red velvet dress. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps. "You can't prove anything. The statute of limitations on petty estate disputes ran out years ago."

"This isn't a petty estate dispute, Clara," Charlotte said, standing mere inches from her adversary, looking down slightly with an unwavering gaze. "This is grand larceny, corporate fraud, and the unlawful suppression of a rightful heir. And the federal investigators have been tracking Meridian Crest’s shell accounts for over six months."
