Chapter 3

Michael stared at the gold seal, his hands hovering inches above the document as if touching it might implicate him in a federal crime. He had spent half a decade looking the other way while Clara embezzled funds, manipulated staff rosters, and pushed out legacy employees who remembered the true founders of the Oniship legacy. Michael was a survivor, not a mastermind, and right now his survival instinct screamed that his loyalty had been misplaced.

"Manager Michael," Charlotte said, her tone leaving no room for hesitation. "Unlock the back office. Bring out the master ledgers from the last sixty months. Every ledger, every digital drive, every asset assignment."

Michael swallowed hard, his throat dry. He looked at Clara, whose face was contorted in absolute fury and disbelief. Clara was breathing heavily, her chest rising and falling beneath the rich velvet dress. For years, Clara had treated Michael like an indentured servant, barking orders and threatening termination at the slightest inconvenience. Michael realized, in this singular, crystal-clear moment, that Clara no longer held any power over his livelihood.

"I... right away, Ms. Vale," Michael stammered, turning on his heel with surprising speed for a man of his build. He rushed toward the administrative double doors behind the front desk, his heavy keys jingling frantically.

"Michael, you miserable coward!" Clara screamed, lunging after him, but she was cut off as Charlotte stepped smoothly into her path, blocking her trajectory without using physical force—merely the sheer psychological weight of her presence.

"Let him work, Clara," Charlotte said softly. "You and I have administrative matters to discuss regarding your unauthorized occupancy of the penthouse suite."

Clara’s jaw tightened so hard her teeth clicked. She glared at Charlotte with pure venom. "You think a piece of paper makes you a hotelier? You’ve been living in total obscurity for a decade. Everyone thought you were dead, vanished into thin air after the accident. You abandoned this place!"

"I survived an attempt to make me permanently disappear," Charlotte corrected, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a cold, razor-sharp edge that stopped Clara dead in her tracks. "There is a profound difference between leaving and being hunted out of your own home."

The subtle micro-expression of dread that flickered across Clara’s face did not escape Charlotte’s notice. It confirmed every suspicion that had kept Charlotte training in isolation for the past ten years. The hostile takeover of the Grand Oniship Hotel was never just a business dispute; it was a crime scene waiting to be unraveled from the top down.
