Chapter 5

The tension in the private lounge grew so thick it felt almost tangible, a heavy pressure that made breathing deliberate and measured. Charlotte sat back in the leather armchair, her athletic frame relaxed yet primed for action, mirroring the discipline of a tactical professional who had spent years preparing for this exact confrontation.
"Us both?" Charlotte repeated, letting the word hang in the air like a condemned sentence. "So you admit there was a mutual conspiracy, Clara? That is progress. At least we are shedding the illusion of your sole legitimacy."
Clara’s hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, her manicured nails biting into her palms. "You have no idea what it took to keep this place afloat when the economy crashed and the investors abandoned ship. You were gone! Lying low in some forgotten corner of the world while I dealt with bankruptcies, union strikes, and structural failures. I earned every square inch of velvet in this hotel."
"You inherited a collapsing debt and used it as an excuse to steal the entire foundation," Charlotte countered, her tone remaining chillingly calm. She refused to match Clara’s emotional volatility. "My grandfather built this hotel as a sanctuary of genuine hospitality, not a private piggy bank for your high-society vanity projects. Every dollar you siphoned out of these accounts is accounted for in these pages."
Michael cleared his throat nervously, stepping closer to the desk. He tapped a finger against the third ledger. "Actually, Ms. Vale, it goes deeper than just the general ledger. About three years ago, Clara—Mrs. Vance—began liquidating the secondary properties tied to the trust. The old downtown annex and the coastal resort holdings were sold off under questionable emergency clauses."
"Sold to whom?" Charlotte asked sharply.
"Shell companies," Michael whispered, casting a nervous glance toward Clara. "All tracing back to an overseas holding firm named Meridian Crest. No one could ever trace the ultimate beneficiary, but the wire transfers always cleared through Clara’s private banking channel."
Clara sneered, regaining a shred of her haughty composure. "Meridian Crest is a legitimate international investment group. They bought those properties legally because the estate was drowning in tax liens that you failed to manage from your hiding hole."

"I didn't fail to manage them, Clara. My accounts were frozen by a court order that you and your legal accomplices fraudulently obtained while I was hospitalized," Charlotte said, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. The memory of the sterile hospital room and the shadowy figures who tried to silence her flashed behind her eyes, but she pushed the emotion down, locking it away behind her ironclad resolve.
Clara’s lips parted slightly. The micro-expression of shock that crossed her face was unmistakable—she had clearly believed Charlotte would never live to tell the story of that hospital room.
