Chapter 2

The heavy parchment caught the morning sunlight streaming through the towering glass windows of the Grand Oniship Hotel. Across the top, embossed in dark, heavy lettering that brooked no argument, was the official title: HOTEL ONISHIP DEED. A gleaming gold seal caught the light, stamped with the notary insignia of a federal district judge.

Charlotte placed the document flat upon the polished marble front desk. The slap of the paper against the stone was the only sound in the vast, tense room. Michael stepped forward instinctively, his eyes drawn to the seal like a moth to a flame. He knew that seal. He had seen its duplicate locked away in the main office safe years ago, right before the old owner mysteriously vanished and Clara took over the reins of power.

Clara gasped, taking a sharp, involuntary step backward, her velvet skirt rustling harshly against the floor. "Where did you get that? That’s forged! It has to be!" she stammered, her voice losing its previous theatrical dominance and sliding into genuine panic.

Michael reached out with trembling fingers, adjusting his uniform collar before gently touching the corner of the document. His eyes scanned the legal descriptions, the signatures, and the exact corporate hierarchy outlined in black ink. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin a pale, sickly gray. He looked up slowly from the paper, his gaze shifting from the deed to Charlotte’s unyielding expression.

"Charlotte Vale?" Michael whispered, the name tasting foreign and heavy on his tongue, like a ghost stepping out of the history books.

Charlotte stood up from the marble floor, brushing an invisible speck of dust from her brown pants. Her athletic frame radiated quiet power. She didn't look like a vagrant or an opportunistic scam artist; she looked like a rightful heir reclaiming her throne. She leaned slightly over the counter, meeting Michael’s terrified eyes with a gaze that held no malice, only absolute, unbending justice.

"Yes, Michael," Charlotte said, her voice clear and resonant. "This hotel belongs to me."

The silence in the lobby was absolute. A few concierge staff members near the luggage carts froze mid-motion, realizing that the dynamic of the entire establishment had shifted in less than ten seconds. Clara lunged forward, her manicured fingernails nearly grazing the paper before Charlotte smoothly pulled it just out of reach, her reflexes lightning-fast.

"You can't just walk in here with a piece of paper and claim this empire!" Clara shrieked, finally dropping all pretenses of polite society. "I have run this place for years! I am the Oniship family!"

"You share a last name by marriage and a greed by habit, Clara," Charlotte replied calmly, turning her full, intense attention toward her adversary. "The audit starts now."
