Chapter 6

The afternoon sun shifted, casting long, dramatic shadows across the mahogany-paneled walls of the consultation lounge. Charlotte closed the ledger with a soft thud that echoed like a gavel dropping in a courtroom. She stood up, her brown tank top and durable pants giving her the appearance of someone ready for physical labor rather than a boardroom negotiation.

"Michael," Charlotte instructed, her voice cutting through the heavy silence. "Call the senior department heads. Head chef, head of housekeeping, chief of security, and the head of guest relations. Tell them to assemble in the main conference hall in twenty minutes."

Michael blinked, surprised by the speed of her command. "All of them, Ms. Vale? Even the ones loyal to Clara?"

"Especially the ones loyal to Clara," Charlotte replied evenly. "They need to understand who signs their paychecks now before they commit career suicide by following orders from a tenant who no longer has a lease."

Clara scoffed, stepping toward the door with an air of defiant arrogance. "You think a quick meeting will turn my staff against me? They respect me. They fear me, too, and fear is a much more reliable motivator than your little speeches about family legacy."

"Fear is a fragile leash, Clara. It snaps the moment the master loses the stick," Charlotte said as she walked past her adversary toward the door. "Let’s go see how strong your leash really is."

The walk down the grand hallway toward the main conference hall felt like a procession. Bellhops and desk clerks paused in their duties, watching the strange trio approach: Clara, furious and desperate; Michael, sweating through his bellhop uniform; and Charlotte, moving with the quiet, devastating grace of an apex predator returning to her territory.

When they entered the spacious conference room, the four department heads were already seated around the large oak table. Heads turned in unison. A heavy murmur rippled through the room as they recognized Charlotte. Rumors of the true heir’s survival had been whispering through the hotel staff for weeks, treated like urban legends until this very moment.

"Everyone, please take a seat," Charlotte said, taking the head of the table—the exact seat her grandfather had occupied for thirty years. Clara hovered near the back, refusing to sit, her arms crossed defensively over her dark red velvet dress.

Michael scurried to the corner, pulling out a small notepad. He looked sick, realizing he was trapped between two warring factions of high-stakes corporate warfare.

Charlotte placed her hands flat on the table, leaning forward slightly. "Good afternoon. I am Charlotte Oniship Vale. And our audit of the Grand Oniship Hotel begins right now."
