Chapter 7

The silence in the conference room was suffocating. David, the head of security—a burly man with a permanent scowl and a military posture—shifted uneasily in his chair. He had taken direct orders from Clara for four years, looking the other way whenever questionable packages arrived at the loading dock.

"Ms. Vale," David began, his voice deep and gravelly. "With all due respect, Mrs. Vance has run this hotel profitably through some very difficult fiscal quarters. We don't know you. For all we know, you’re an impostor with a clever forgery."

Charlotte didn't blink. She turned her intense gaze directly onto David, recognizing the soldier's instinct for loyalty. "You value loyalty, David. That’s a commendable trait. But ask yourself: is your loyalty tied to a person, or to the oath you swore to protect the integrity of this institution?" She slid a single printed document across the table toward him. "That is the forensic audit of your department's private security budget over the last thirty-six months. Notice the gap between allocated funds and actual equipment maintenance? Half your security cameras have been dummy lenses recording to nothing."

David’s thick eyebrows shot up. He snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the columns. The color drained from his weathered face as he realized his entire security apparatus had been hollowed out from the inside to pad executive bonuses.

Clara stepped forward, her voice rising in panic. "Don't listen to her, David! She's manufacturing lies to destabilize our operations! Security, remove her from this room immediately!"

David didn't move. He looked up from the paper, his eyes hard, fixing Clara with a look of profound betrayal. "Is it true, Mrs. Vance? Were the cameras dummy units?"

Clara faltered, her breath catching in her throat. Her silence was all the confirmation the room needed. The head of housekeeping, a kind-looking woman named Elena who had worked at the hotel for twenty years, brought a trembling hand to her mouth.

"You cut our linen budgets by forty percent while claiming supply chain shortages," Elena whispered, looking at Clara with tears of bitter disappointment welling in her eyes. "We were washing frayed sheets three times over while you ordered custom French velvet for your personal suite."

"I had to cut costs to keep the doors open!" Clara shouted, her voice cracking under the mounting pressure, losing all its polished composure. "None of you would have jobs if I hadn't made the hard choices!"

"Those weren't hard choices, Clara. That was theft," Charlotte said quietly, her voice cutting through the noise like a scalpel. She stood up slowly, her athletic build commanding the entire room. "The Grand Oniship Hotel is no longer your playground. Effective immediately, all administrative access, financial controls, and security privileges held by Clara Vance are revoked."
