Chapter 7: The Loyal Guardian

At 6:00 AM, the doorbell of the Vance residence chimed softly.
Julian, who hadn't slept a wink, opened the heavy oak front door with a mug of black coffee in his hand. Standing on the porch, holding a thermos and a tray of homemade blueberry muffins, was Evelyn Reed.
Evelyn was Clara’s childhood best friend and Louis’s pediatrician. She had been there the day Clara was diagnosed, the day Louis took his first steps, and the heartbreaking afternoon they laid Clara to rest. Unlike the socialites Adriana surrounded herself with, Evelyn carried an effortless warmth, wearing simple linen pants, a soft sweater, and a look of deep concern behind her wire-rimmed glasses.
"I heard the news," Evelyn said gently, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "Marcus’s wife called me. How is Louis?"
"He’s upstairs, still sleeping," Julian said, running a hand through his unkempt hair. "He thinks he broke the family, Evelyn."
Evelyn set the muffins on the kitchen island and turned to Julian, her eyes softening with fierce empathy. "Louis didn't break anything, Julian. He exposed what was already rotten. When you started dating Adriana a year ago, I kept quiet because I wanted you to be happy. But I saw how she looked at that boy when you weren't watching. She resented him."
"I was blind," Julian confessed, staring down at the polished marble floor. "I was so obsessed with giving Louis a 'complete' family that I ignored all the red flags. She mocked Clara’s memory right in front of him."
Evelyn placed a warm, reassuring hand on his arm. Her touch was grounding, a stark contrast to Adriana’s demanding presence.
"You weren't blind, Julian. You were grieving, and you were trying to be a good father," Evelyn said softly. "The difference is, when the truth hit you, you chose your son over your pride, your company, and high-society gossip. Clara would be so proud of you today."

For the first time in twenty-four hours, Julian felt the suffocating knot in his chest loosen.
