Chapter 1: The Fitting Room Betrayal

The plush ivory carpet of *Maison de Luxe* felt colder than it looked. Six-year-old Louis clutch-gripped the worn blue velvet box against his chest, his knuckles turning pale beneath his neatly pressed navy cuffs. His heart hammered in his ribcage like a trapped bird. All he wanted was for Adriana to wear his mother’s heirloom pendant down the aisle tomorrow. He thought it would make them a real family.

"Adriana?" Louis’s voice barely rose above a whisper. "I wanted to show you something..."

Adriana turned around on the circular velvet dais, her multi-thousand-dollar beaded gown catching the golden glow of the crystal chandelier. Her expression, normally polished for high-society cameras, hardened into immediate disgust.

"Not now, Louis," she snapped, striking his hand away with a dismissive flick of her manicured fingers.

The antique box slipped, hitting the soft rug with a dull thud. Louis dropped to his knees, his eyes stinging with unshed tears as he reached to cradle the scuffed velvet.

"It’s Mom’s..." he whispered, his small shoulders shaking.

Adriana stepped closer, leaning down so only the boy could hear the venom beneath her breath. Her diamond tiara sparkled cruelly under the boutique lights. "Listen to me very carefully, you little brat. Your mother is dead. And starting tomorrow, this house will have new rules. You speak when spoken to, and you keep your junk out of my sight."

"What rules, exactly?"

A deep, quiet voice cut through the salon like shattered glass.

Adriana froze. Julian stood framed in the arched doorway in his black tuxedo, his jaw set in rigid stone. His dark eyes, usually filled with gentle warmth for the woman he planned to marry, were now colder than ice.

He didn't rush. He walked deliberately across the room, kneeling down beside his son. He lifted the velvet box, placed a steadying hand on Louis’s trembling shoulder, and stood to his full height.

"Adriana," Julian said softly, his voice dangerously even. "You think I don't understand. But I finally understand everything."
