Chapter 13: A Boy’s Blessing

That evening, Julian took Louis out for ice cream at the local diner near the harbor. Louis happily swung his legs from the booth, eating a double scoop of mint chocolate chip while describing his school science project with boundless energy.
"Dad," Louis said suddenly, pausing with his spoon halfway to his mouth.
"Yeah, buddy?"
"Can Aunt Evelyn come with us to the aquarium next Saturday?"
Julian smiled, taking a sip of his water. "Of course she can. But why do you ask?"
Louis looked down at his melting ice cream, his expression turning thoughtful and sweet beyond his years. "Because when she’s around, you smile with your whole face, Dad. Like you used to in the old photos with Mom."
Julian felt a lump form in his throat. He looked at his son, amazed by the child's profound intuition. "Do you like having Evelyn around, Louis?"
"I love her," Louis said simply, looking up with bright, clear eyes. "She doesn't get mad when I spill juice. She listens to my stories about space. And... she always reminds me how much Mom loved me."
Louis reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper—the same letter Clara had written to the woman who would one day join their family.
"Dad," Louis said, sliding the note across the table to his father. "I think Mom wrote this for Evelyn. We just didn't know it yet."
Julian stared at the note, then at his smiling son. A deep, unshakable clarity washed over him.
