Chapter 5: A Father’s Promise

The drive home along the coastal highway was wrapped in silence, broken only by the soft purr of the sedan’s engine and the rhythm of the ocean waves crashing against the rocks below.
In the rearview mirror, Julian watched Louis. The boy was staring out the window, his small fingers still tracing the velvet texture of his mother’s box. He looked smaller than usual, lost in the backseat of the luxury car.
Julian pulled the car into the driveway of their modern hillside home. The house was already adorned with white lilies, marquee tents on the lawn, and fairy lights meant for tomorrow's reception. A team of caterers was unloading crates near the kitchen entrance.
Julian unbuckled his seatbelt, turned around, and looked into his son’s eyes.
"Louis," Julian said gently.
The boy looked up, tears welling in his hazel eyes. "Dad... is it my fault? Did I ruin the wedding because I brought the box?"
Julian felt a sharp tear in his soul. He unclicked Louis’s seatbelt, pulled the boy onto his lap in the front seat, and wrapped his arms tightly around him. Louis broke down, sobbing into his father’s collar.
"No, buddy. Never," Julian whispered fiercely, kissing the top of his son’s head. "You saved us, Louis. You showed me the truth. You did the bravest thing anyone could ever do."
"I just wanted Mom to be proud of us," Louis choked out.
"She is proud of you. And I am so, so proud of you," Julian said, holding him closer. "Listen to me, Louis. I made a mistake. I thought bringing someone new would give you the family you deserved. But family isn't about grand weddings or pretending. It's about real love, respect, and kindness. I will never, ever let anyone make you feel small in your own home. I promise you."
Louis rested his cheek on his father’s shoulder, his breathing slowly steadying. "Just you and me, Dad?"
May you like
"Just you and me," Julian smiled, wiping away his own silent tear. "Always."
