Chapter 9: The Garden of Sarah

Spring arrived with an explosion of color along the cliffs of Big Sur.

Daniel and Noah spent their afternoons restoring the wild botanical garden behind the cottage. They pulled out invasive thistles, built stone retaining walls, and planted rows of native wildflowers: California poppies, coastal sage, and sweet-scented lavender.

Noah had his own small wooden wheelbarrow and a pair of blue gardening gloves. He took his responsibilities as ""Chief Soil Inspector"" with intense seriousness.

""Grandpa, this worm is helping the roots!"" Noah announced, holding up a small earthworm with proud curiosity.

""He certainly is, Noah,"" Daniel laughed, wiping sweat from his brow. ""He’s doing the unseen work that makes everything above ground grow strong.""

Elena, Sarah’s former pediatric nurse who had moved to the coast to direct the local foundation clinic, walked up the wooden path carrying a basket of fresh sourdough bread and fruit.

""You're working the boy hard, Mr. Sterling,"" Elena teased, setting the basket on the porch table.

""He’s working me hard, Elena,"" Daniel smiled, leaning against his shovel. ""I spent forty years managing freight routes, and I’m just now learning how to grow a tomato.""

""It’s never too late to learn how to plant things that actually matter,"" Elena replied gently, watching Noah carefully place the earthworm back into the dark soil.
