Chapter 4: The Shattered Veil

Downstairs in the executive bridal suite, Victoria paced across the white plush carpet like a caged animal. Her bridal bouquet of white calla lilies lay crushed on the glass dressing table.
The heavy mahogany double doors clicked open.
Daniel stepped inside. He had removed his boutonnière and unbuttoned his tuxedo vest. His silver hair was immaculate, but his eyes held the terrifying, lethal clarity of a man who had nothing left to lose. Behind him stood two plainclothes detectives from the State Police Major Crimes Unit.
Victoria turned, attempting to muster a fragile, tearful smile. ""Daniel... thank God. You must see that this is all a misunderstanding. Someone is trying to sabotage us—""
Daniel placed his smartphone on the glass table and pressed play.
Sarah’s recorded voice rang out clearly, echoing off the gilded vanity mirrors:
*""I'm not fixing fraud, Victoria... Dad needs to know who he actually invited into our home.""*
Victoria froze. The blood drained from her face until she was as pale as the ivory gown she wore. The manicured hands that had held Sarah’s son earlier that morning began to tremble uncontrollably.
""The mechanic who inspected Sarah’s brake lines in Monterey was arrested thirty minutes ago,"" Daniel said, his voice deadly quiet. ""He gave up your brother’s name in exchange for a non-capital plea deal. The wire transfer of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from your private trust cleared his account six hours before Sarah’s crash.""
Victoria backed into the vanity, knocking over a crystal perfume bottle that shattered on the marble floor, releasing the suffocating scent of gardenias.
""She was going to ruin everything, Daniel!"" Victoria suddenly shrieked, the sweet veneer fracturing into naked, ugly venom. ""She was a self-righteous little girl who didn't understand how the world works! I built your foundation's international network! I deserved half of that empire!""
""You deserve nothing,"" Daniel said, stepping aside. ""Take her.""
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling the heavy silver handcuffs from his belt. ""Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny.""
As the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists over the delicate satin of her bridal gloves, Victoria let out a broken, animalistic wail.

Daniel did not watch as she was led away through the service exit. He turned his back, walking out into the quiet corridor.
