Chapter 14: The Young Apprentice

By age fourteen, Noah had inherited both his mother’s sharp ethical mind and his grandfather’s visionary drive.

He spent his summers interning at the marine conservation institute funded by the Foundation, cataloging whale migration patterns and studying coastal ecosystem restoration.

In the cottage workshop, Daniel—now in his early seventies, his hands steady and his mind sharp—taught Noah the fine art of woodworking.

""The secret to carving red cedar, Noah,"" Daniel explained, guiding the boy’s hands along the lathe, ""is to follow the grain. If you fight the wood, it splinters. If you listen to where it wants to bend, it will yield something that lasts for centuries.""

""Like people?"" Noah asked with a sly smile.

Daniel chuckled warmly, patting his grandson’s shoulder. ""Exactly like people. You’re getting too smart for me, young man.""

""I had a good teacher, Grandpa.""

They stood side by side in the sunlit workshop, surrounded by the sweet scent of cedar shavings and the steady rhythm of the crashing surf outside—two generations forged in truth, anchored in love, and completely at peace.
